This story introduces readers to a clever little inchworm who measures things with his body to avoid being eaten by a hungry bird. It has beautiful illustrations and is a must read in the classroom for me.
This book sort of reminded me of the Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
This would be a good book for younger grades. There are not many words on each page and the words are easy to understand, other than a few. The illustrations fill up most of the page.
Review-Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni, 1960. The Inchworm is clever and quick to think. The inchworm knows ways to stay alive from the bird. The images are simple, showing many simple shapes just like the simple idea the worm used to live.
Blurb- I would read this as a fun story to my class to get their brain thinking about how easy it was to trick the bad bird.
Quote- “he inched out of sight.“
The ending of this book had some humor that is subtle, but I think would be enjoyable to kids.

This book, a Caldecott Honor book, is about a little inch worm who constantly gets asked by other animals to measure things. One day he comes upon a bird who wants to eat him and he cleverly gets away.

I like how at the end, the inchworm is smarter and tricks the nightingale into singing with its eyes closed while the inchworm inches away. I would read this as a fun book!

I like the ending of this book where he encounters the song bird who threatens to eat the inch worm if he doesn't measure his song. Instead of measuring the song the inch worm inches away.
This a humorous book, but can have a lot of meaning behind the inch worm. Easy for any classroom with young kids.
Caldecott Honor Book. This book is about an inch worm who measures things. He measures the wings of other birds. He comes across a bird that sings. He doesn't know how to measure this bird, so he inches away.
This RF written and illustrated by Leo Lionni won the Caldecott award! This book would be a great way to facilitate a math lesson about length. I think it would be good if the students had a shared reading and paired it with thinking of objects to measure in the classroom! This book contains stuff that we might not be able to measure, but we could find stuff all around and share what we find out! We could even make estimates prior to measuring
published 1960. This book had really good use of color. There was a lot of greens used throughout the book. This book has a good message that goes along with it. “no matter how small, everything has a purpose.
I love how the worm escapes the bird! He is extremely clever to think of this alternative.

Leo Lionni does it again with this animal fantasy book about an inch worm who claims he is useful so he doesn't get eaten. The inch worm then measure things in the story. He encounters a nightingale who tells him to measure his song or he will eat him, the inch worm then inches away while the nightingale sings. This lesson plan is great to go along with the story http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceLesson/Preview/30039 #ucflae3414sp17
Nice book to teach kids the name of some birds, even if I must admit I'm not a fan of the illustrations...
