“A boy was collecting pinecones in his wagon when he met a robot”

Boy and Bot | Ame Dyckman

This is a very funny, creative, and entertaining story. It ties elements of robots and futuristic technology into the life of a little boy. The robot is the little boys friend. It was entertaining when the robot tried to fix the boy by piling him up and reading an instruction manual, as you would do for most machines.

The boy tried to fix the robot but couldn‘t. When the boy went to sleep the owner switch got bumped and he turned back on. Fresh batch of robot picture books: Sharing Does Not Compute is fun and I'm stunned a board book is in such good condition, given the target audience. Little Bot and Sparrow is sweet with beautiful illustrations but I can't help feeling it was trying too hard to be slightly melancholy. Welcome to Your Awesome Robot is a fun way to spend an afternoon with a cardboard box. Boy + Bot is just adorable. I would happily have adventures with that Bot.

Boy + Bot is a funny story about a boy and a robot meeting. They may have differences, but they try everything they can to help each other. This SF book is great for young readers to learn more about inventing and robots. www.rif.org has awesome extension activities students can use to extend their love for robots! This book would fit best as IR for students who are more interested in science books. #UCFLAE3414SP20

charlotteclancy UDL 7.1- Optimize individual choice and autonomy. Students can optimize their individual choice with this IR. EL 3- Encourage self-talk. When a student is reading this book independently, encourage the student to read it out loud to themselves. 5y

This SF book is a great book to share with young readers! The story is about a boy and a bot who meet in the woods. Through a series of events, they end up taking care of each other as they would take care of a bot or a boy! In the end, they create a beautiful friendship. This would be a fun RA book, and would be a great book to use when teaching students about fluency!#UCFLAE3414SP20

MaddyJ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qr9CJYp_B24 - Here is a fun way to do a read aloud with a recording of the book! UDL principle 1.2 to offer alternatives for auditory information and EL 14 to simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant can all be accomplished by using this video of a RA! It offers a different way to tell the book both visually and audibly, and is said slowly for EL's. Plus, you can use closed captioning for EL students! 5y
DrSpalding I like digital recordings however please know how important it is for you to read aloud to your students. This shows them a passion for reading and models effective reading techniques. (edited) 5y

This is a picture of my favorite page from “Boy + Bot”. This was an adorable SF book for children. I would use this as a RA. A perfect lesson plan to go with it is https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/material/boy-and-bot-criss-cross #ucae3414f19

ebrown UDL 5.1, use multiple media for communication. ESOL strategy 43. 5y
DrSpalding This could be considered science fiction but it is more so fantasy. This makes me think of a text to self connection regarding a cartoon called the Jetsons. 5y

Boy and Bot written by Ame Dyckman and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino is a SF PB about a boy who ends up becoming best friends with a robot when they meet in the woods one day. Their friendship takes an even sweeter turn when bot accidently gets turned off… This story would be great in a RA or IR for younger students when talking about friendship, sickness, and what a robot is! #ucflae3414f19

KristenScala I would include ESOL strategy 9 and have students make a T list comparing/contrasting humans and robots. I would use UDL strategies 7.2 and 3.2.

#lae3414sp19 This SF picture book by Ame Dyckman and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino is a cute story about the friendship between a young boy and a robot. This book would be a great way to introduce the concept of what a robot is to your children! It even highlights some of the differences between robots and humans and would be a great RA to introduce this lesson.

mluter https://www.modrobotics.com/education/lesson-plans/pre-k/a-k-2-what-is-a-robot/ In this lesson plan, students are to distinguish the differences between the boy and the boy from the story. They then are to create their very own robot and design it on paper and give it whatever attributes they desire. UDL 7.1 because students are designing their own personal robot. ESOL 29 and 40 because there is some advanced vocab used and the concept of a robot 6y
mluter may be completely new to a student. 6y
MNelson98 This book looks super cute and enjoyable to read! I definitely am adding it to my list for classroom books. I like the idea for them to create their own robot! 6y
DrSpalding This could be considered science fiction but also fantasy. Designing their own robot is a good idea and could be an excellent precursor to a creative writing lesson. 6y

The Good Reads Choice award, Boy + Bot by Ame Dyckman and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino is a cute SF picture book that would be perfect for RT.

supan.katherine Boy + Bot are really good friends who have a lot in common when it comes to having fun. But as soon as Bot gets switched off, Boy thought he was sick and cared for him just like any other human. And as soon Boy fell asleep, Bot thought he was malfunctioning. I definitely recommend giving this book a read to find out the ending! 7y
