Pickpick

I have been waffling between pick and so-so on this one since I finished it earlier today. This is a beautifully written coming-of-age story about a girl‘s struggle with her best friend‘s drug abuse/addiction and general wildness. Unfortunately, the book seemed unfocused and there were some incongruous parts that drew away from the main narrative. 3⭐️

Reggie Idk, you still kinda sold me on it. Stacked. 6y
Redwritinghood @Reggie Ha! I‘ll be curious to hear what you think. I‘m still so on the fence about it. I guess it was good, but far from great. 6y

Jenny and Lauren get together to talk books one last time in 2018. We also talk about our preliminary thoughts on 2019 reading goals.

BookNAround Plum Rains was so good! 6y
ReadingEnvy @BookNAround oh really? Good to know because I bought it after Lauren talked about it! 6y
BookNAround @ReadingEnvy It‘s not something I would normally read (AI? Set in the future?) but I had to read it when it was submitted to the National Reading Group Month Great Group Reads program (I‘m the Selection Committee Manager) and it was subsequently chosen for the list. It‘s definitely in my top 20 books of the year and perhaps my top 10. 6y

ReadingEnvy @BookNAround oh cool, even higher praise then...is that a list the public can see? 6y
BookNAround @readingenvy Yep. It‘s public and released in October every year. This year‘s list is at http://www.nationalreadinggroupmonth.org/ggr_selections.html 6y
ReadingEnvy @BookNAround thanks! I'm on a booklist committee for ALA so I know how much work it is. I'm bookmarking this! 6y

ReadingEnvy @Ruthiella no I missed it! I had to add it after you commented 6y
Lindy The Friend was a 5-star read for me too. When I read Syllabus, I got so excited about her method that I bought an exercise book and her recommended writing implements… but didn‘t get much further. 💜Lynda Barry 💜 6y
ReadingEnvy @Lindy I'm planning to use some of the ideas for my storytelling class, which will be interesting. 6y

The two female friends in this novel are connected to the landscapes in a number of ways. Either one of them or the place might be cursed.... Ahlam, the daughter of an Israeli mother and Palestinian father, has dreams/visions.

There are elements that to me give away that this is a debut novel from a writer with an MFA program influence - extraordinary drug use for one - but it is stronger and more captivating than most novels in that vein.

Alicia @Natasha.C.Barnes omg I know!!!! I haven‘t listened to it or anything but I‘ve been so intrigued and have actually been wanting to read it for a long time so I am pumped. You are the first person I thought of when I opened it!!! ❤️❤️ 7y
EmilyChristine Yay! I‘m so glad you like everything! I had fun shopping for you. 7y
dylanisreading Every Heart a Doorway. ❤️ 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Alicia I think the book is a good entry place bc the podcast has muuuuch more subtle narrative threads--for a long time you don't even realize that these names getting mentioned will come up again and slowly turn into more fully fleshed characters. But the podcast has such great stuff once you get into it-and should prob be listened to in order bc story arcs do come in. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Alicia If you start the book and think it's kinda fun but a little self-indulgent maybe, read on a little farther before bailing--I felt that way at first but then I started to see its merit. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes Never heard of Sonora before but it looks so cool! 7y
Alicia @Natasha.C.Barnes thank you!! I will def start with the novel! Did you listen first? I feel like I get super into audio books my podcasting has really been slacking... also yasss to Sonora! It‘s an indie press which I love and I‘m a sucker for all things Az related... 7y

I can't stop thinking about this novel from Soho press. It's such a quiet, slow burn type of novel. This story follows Ahlam, a half-Jewish, half-Arab teenager trying to find her place in the world. And I can't fathom how the author fit so much meaning into so few pages.

Started this today and already halfway through. It has some seriously beautiful, haunting writing. Full of emotional turmoil and desert mysticism. I grabbed this on a whim. Love when I do that and it turns out to be one of the best things I've read lately. 🌵

kindlorde This is definitely one of the most imaginative books I've read in awhile. 7y

"I understood that my mother being from Israel and my father being Palestinian was something that made them feel lonely together, and that was why they never felt at home anywhere except for perhaps, against all odds, with each other." Hannah Lillith Assadi's SONORA is spellbinding from the start. #JewLit

I'm a sucker for coming of age stories, and when one gets described as a 'fever dream' I have to read it. This is the case with Sonora. I absolutely adore the burned out photograph used as the cover and the texture of the book which unfortunately is difficult to render in a photo.

Pickpick

This is one of those friendships that burns so brightly, taking people out with its fire and flame until it completely burns out. There's love and hate and jealousy, sex and drugs and running away from it all, a never ending party, and an unexplainable friendship. With breathtaking pros, Assadi folds us into these women's lives so much that we can taste their tumbling disaster and fall right along with them.

"But when I was up, I was feverish without fear, in love, my body passionate and full of stars. Higher than any leap could bring me, any rush of performance. I was in love with the world, with the horniness, the meanness, the grandeur of the city crawling beneath my skin. I saw nothing ugly."

When you're unsure about a book then see that Alexandra Kleeman wrote a blurb for it and suddenly you need to read the book RIGHT NOW. Do you have any authors like this??

vivastory I love Junot Diaz's blurbs. He gives the best interviews. So passionate about books and such wide-ranging tastes. 8y
klwestenberg Oooh, this one looked intriguing. Can't wait to hear what you think of it! 8y
StephanieY Good question! When I saw Helen Oyeyemi and George Saunders blurb a short story collection I knew it'd be 💯 (it was!) 8y
