Another weekend prepping for #readersworkshop. Love this quote by Francine Prose: "writers are most commonly being told these days: their characters should be likable and sympathetic so the reader can care about them... But masterpieces survive in which all that's expected of us is that we be INTERESTED in the characters, engaged by their fates, intrigued by their complexities, curious about what will happen to them next."

Giving Austen another chance because a bookish friend loves her so and because Francine Prose is such a fan.

The cover art is ALMOST as magical as the stories in this collection. Ausubel continues to astound me.

This book is EVEN BETTER THE SECOND TIME. My pick for #readersworkshop is one I shove into everyone's hands. We focused on how Roy uses details and repetition of those details to develop characters and create this magnificent, tragic world. #dogsoflitsy

Listened on audio thanks to a recommendation from @kerry. Took me A LONG time to finish, but enjoyed listening when I had time. Grew up in South Louisiana so it was fun to run through the cane fields solving crimes! 😊

This was more so-so than pick, but I finished it and enjoyed it. Would have been a terrific New Yorker article...a 250 page book felt a little stretched. Fascinating story and loved learning about Timbuktu's literary heritage.

To call this book a love story is like calling Doctor Zhivago a love story - it is much more than that. You can feel the despondency of living in the Stalin era where everyone is listening and informing and no one can be trusted. There are similarities to Solzhenitsyn, but less intense. In fact, this is a good novel for someone who wants to get a taste of Russian literature or who wants a lighter version of it. PUB DATE: March 14
