The most significant translation in one hundred years of one of the greatest works of world literature From Ali Baba and the forty thieves to the voyages of Sinbad, the stories of The Arabian Nights are timeless and unforgettable. Published here in three volumes, this magnificent new edition brings these tales to life for modern readers in the first complete English translation since Richard Burton s of the 1880s. Every night for three years the vengeful King Shahriyar sleeps with a different virgin, and the next morning puts her to death. To end this brutal pattern, the vizier's daughter, Shahrazad, begins to tell the king enchanting tales of mystical lands peopled with princes and hunchbacks, of the Angel of Death and magical spirits, and of jinnis trapped in rings and in lamps a sequence of stories that will last 1,001 nights, and that will save her own life."

I plan to read all of the tales by the end of the year. Doable, yes? 😄

Has anyone read these?

Jabberwocky I am ridiculously obsessed with the thousand and one nights. Is this the Burton translation? If you are interested in some history and theory this is a great follow up read! 7y
Eyelit It‘s the Michael Lyons translation. Thanks for the tip on a follow up book - totally stacked! 😃 @Jabberwocky 7y
tournevis I read a French translation years ago, which I now understand is not complete, though "complete" for this collection is a matter of interpretation. 7y

Trying to decide on a #bookwithpictures for #seasonsreadinds2016 I discovered that I own very few illustrated versions of books!!! And that's something I might want to change - illustrations are often incredibly creative & original.

This was one my favorite books as a young girl - I can't say how many hours I spent gazing at the rich colors & details in these pictures by Janusz Grabianski in this edition of The Tales Of 1001 Nights 💎✨

BookishMarginalia Lovely pic! 8y
CoffeeAndABook @BookishMarginalia Thank you!! This is the scenario - that's my meager offering of "jewelry stuff" arranged artfully on our kitchen floor around a book ??? 8y

There are plenty #classicyouhaventread books on my tbr - but I'm definitely going to tackle the Arabian Nights in 2017 (after all, I figure 3 years is long enough to sit unread on my shelf). Looking forward to it! #seasonsreadings2016

Eyelit @Laura317 thanks! It was a gift quite a few years ago from my mum. She made another one for me this year and I'll have it at the end of the month. I'm really excited to see what she made. 😃 8y
RealLifeReading Wow it's in three volumes? They are very lovely! 8y
jmtrivera I now feel guilty for not reading more of the unread books on my shelf in less than three years. But beautiful books! 8y
merelybookish I read some of the Arabian Nights for the first time a few years ago and fell in love. (I was teaching a class on world lit.) It would be such an amazing feat to read the entire collection! 8y
readinginthedark I've had so much trouble finding them all! I'll have to get these editions. 8y
GlitteryOtters Ahhh, thanks for the reminder!! I started this years ago while visiting family, had to leave it and return home before I could finish. I should go back and read the entire thing from the start! 8y
CrowCAH @Eyelit I chose the same book for my seasons readings December daily book challenge too! 8y
