It was funny to read this short story while waiting for my mammogram results at the doctor‘s office. It‘s all about a man lost in his daydreams while in the midst of mundane life events. It was a bit meta to escape into his story in that moment. I‘ll admit, in this case I actually love the 2013 movie version more than the 1939 story. It took the original idea and added more depth and adventure.

I‘ve not read this short story (yet) or anything from James Thurber, nor have I seen either film based on it, but I do know this is about #flightsoffancy. 😀

With a life lived mostly in fantasy, is Walter Mitty the greatest #Wannabe of all time?

(Still from the 1947 film starring Danny Kaye)

A very short story that I wish was longer. The ending, to me seemed to just be cut off.

tournevis The first movie version, from 1947, is I think better that the story, and there is a logical ending. You can forget the existence of the 2013 version. We should all forget that one. 6y
LittleMummyMe @tournevis I didn't know there was a 1947 movie. I will have to look it up and see if I can watch it. Thank you. 6y
tournevis @LittleMummyMe It is soooo goood! 6y
tif @tournevis I actually LOVE the 2013 one. It's the only Ben Stiller film I like in fact! 6y
tournevis @tif I like Keeping the Faith. I hated his Walter Mitty 6y

I have fallen hard for the works of James Thurber this summer and I put this on my Kindle, having only been aware of the Danny Kaye movie. It was super super short and felt like the kind of thing that an English class could really pick apart.

This has been on my Audible TBR since the Ben Stiller movie came out and it was offered for@free by Audible. It hardly counts as part of #MountTBR clocking in at 15 minutes including a little afterward by Ben Stiller, but I am unashamed; I‘m gonna count it. I‘m going to listen to it again right away.

zezeki I loved the movie, had no idea that there's a book too😀 7y
DivaDiane @zeljka It‘s a very short story! 7y
Moony That's a good idea "Gardening and audiobooks" ? 7y
DivaDiane @Moony Only, I had to think too much at first and missed a lot so I had to listen to it again. The story itself was only about 12 minutes long, though, so no biggie! 7y

#FierceFeb #9to5 @Cinfhen @batsy Do you often wonder about people? There‘s the 9 to 5 person & then there‘s the other person. I think it‘s intriguing 🤔

MinDea Did you read this book? I have only seen the movie. I thought the movie was good and wondered if the book was good/better...? 7y
Cathythoughts @MinDea I havnt read the book. But I love the whole idea of Walter Mitty. 7y

#characters2017 #spacecadet #kingofwishfulthinking Combining two prompts for the character of Walter Mitty-introduced in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" a story by James Thurber in The New Yorker in 1939. Growing up I watched the 1947 Danny Kaye movie on tv with my dad, I later read the story in an American short story class & I've watched the 2013 Ben Stiller remake. Walter Mitty spaced out into daydreams & was the king of wishful thinking.??

DebinHawaii The story is in this Thurber book too. 8y
rubyslippersreads Great pick! 8y
alisahar I watched the Danny Kaye version too! Never watched the remake. 8y

WarpedSweetness I didn't realize this was a book! I really liked the Ben Stiller movie. 8y
DebinHawaii @rubyslippersreads @LibrarianRyan Thanks! @alisahar It's not bad but the Danny Kaye one has more sentimental value for me. 😀👍 @WarpedSweetness The Ben Stiller movie follows the short story fairly closely though the movie is more optimistic. Worth a read. 👍📚 8y
Smangela I haven't seen either movie but I love Danny Kaye! Now I'm going to check my library for both! I loved the short story ❤️ 8y
WarpedSweetness @DebinHawaii I'll have to read the short story then! 8y

“To hell with the handkerchief,” said Walter Mitty scornfully. He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then, with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.
