It looked like any other carnival, but of course it wasn't. The boy saw it from the car window, the tops of the large trailer rides over the parked trains by the railway tracks. His parents were driving towards the new mall and he was looking forward to that too, but the tracery of lights above the gloomy trains caught his imagination . . . Andy walks into Burleigh's Amazing Hall of Mirrors, and then he walks right into the mirror, becomes a reflection. Another boy, a boy who is not Andy, goes home with Andy's parents. And the boy who was once Andy is pulled--literally pulled, by the hands, by a girl named Mona--into another world, a carnival world where anything might happen.Master storyteller Neil Jordan creates his most commercial novel in years in this crackling, filmic fantasy--which is also a parable of adolescence, how children become changelings, and how they find their own way.

Magical. Superb. Mysterious.
I was hesitant to read this book, based on the reviews labelling it as overly wordy and hard to process/read. However, I really enjoyed it!! I quite like descriptive stories that allow me to perfectly paint a picture of the scene inside of my head. The plot was of course what drew me in and kept me interested. A boy is pulled into a mirror, something else comes out. Who isn‘t intrigued by magic mirrors and carnivals?

Super upset that I DNFed this! Had such a fascinating and unique premise that I was intrigued by but in my opinion, it was poorly executed. Almost purple-prosey and packed with excessive descriptions and details. I really tried but couldn‘t get past the first 60 pages.

So I read this book because the premise sounded amazing, but I had to force myself to finish it. The prose is amazing, the plot is interesting, and it's written entirely in third person omniscient. The book is 90% narration and sometimes I had to reread section 2,3,or 4 times before I got the idea of what was happening. If that sounds good to you, you will love this book. Otherwise you will, like me, fight to get through it.

It was a good book and the concept and general plot were so great, but it was too complicated for me to process. I took so long to read it because I was struggling to piece it all together. Maybe it's just me, but it's definitely worth a read.

Hmm, this is a hard one. I enjoyed it but I'm fairly certain not everyone would. I suppose, I like the writing. This book is wordy, really wordy but that is ok. It is also strange & mysterious & fantastical & all the things carnivals are, so that is ok too. What is it about? A boy wanders into a house of mirrors and something else wanders back out. The book is part mystery and part fairytale and definitely fun for fans of Neil Gaiman.

Despite a wide range of mixed reviews on this beauty, the cover and synopsis are enough that I can't turn it away. Ha. Some times the more mixed the reviews are, the more excited I am to read a book. I like seeing where I fall on the rating scale.

Starting this for my July group read with my @LitMail PBC. One of the (many) things I love about this group is that I end up reading outside of my regular genre box. They've opened me up to so many books that I would never have found on my own. 💜

It's gone from 84 to 61 in the last 90 minutes. So, I'm going to chill out with my book and a cuppa. The thing about this book is I cannot figure out if it is for adults or children. Huh.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I wish it was 61 here. It's still 80 out and it's 9:30 pm. In May, for gosh sakes. Gah! 8y
angrylilasian I can't believe how cold it got within 30 minutes! 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @BarbaraTheBibliophage Well-now it's 50 and falling. So within 3 hours, it's 35 degrees colder. Gotta love Chicago! 8y

A quirky twist to the expected carnivale story. A boy walks into the mirror maze and something that looks like him walks out and continues life with his parents. Find out what happens to the boy and the imposter in this dark little tale full of atmosphere, carnies, and the reflection of the outsider against a 'normal' life. Really enjoyed the twists in this gem!

Studying like crazy left me not wanting to read an actual book. My brain needed a break and here is the product of that break. Look! There's room for more 😊 PS: that's Cynthia the cat.

Peddler410 I would need several sheets! It's pretty bad 😳 8y

I really wanted to love this book but I just didn't connect with it. The language was beautiful at times and the story could have been great but I felt at a remove. I didn't feel invested in the characters or what happened to them. But I can imagine other people loving it. **ARC received from netgalley and publisher in exchange for an honest review**

Foragingfantasy This looks right up my alley. Sorry you didn't love it. 8y
ScorpioBookDreams @Foragingfantasy it was a personal thing. I like more character development and connecting with characters. But I can see others loving it. 8y

You enter the carnival's hall of mirrors, only to find yourself in another world while your reflection returns home to claim your life. Come this June, I think I might get in line for a ticket to this carnival. #2017MostAnticipatedBooks
