Fed up with the lack of Asian and female representation in her American textbooks, the author of this essay studies abroad in China for a year to get back to her roots, hopefully to connect more with what was missing in the US. Instead, she realizes this. (totally meant to post this as a quote, my bad) #asianamerican #nonfictionnovember #overthis #readoverthis

Just spent way more $ than I can afford on some queer manga cos my libraries don't have any of it and I can't ask for these as Xmas presents bcz I'm not out to my parents and probably never will be 😅 Also I'm bi. And I've only ever told my therapist that. So. Yep. Thanks for making a community that made me feel safe enough to say this. I'm gonna go cry over how much I just spent and read this collection of essays by Asian American teen girls.

queerbookreader But actually you all should check this book out, the lack of all around representation of Asian Americans (specifically women) is super concerning. Oftentimes, the default we think of when we hear "racism" is black and white, but it's SO MUCH MORE than that. And I want to try super hard to pay attention to every group. So yeah. Any more suggestions of nonfic about being Asian in America and the racism/sexism/everything else experience would be gr8 7y
saresmoore No guilt or shame! I spent more money than I have on queer comics for my best friend (who is also bi and not out to her parents). Empowerment, freedom, and books ftw! 💜🤗🙌 7y

DGRachel @valeriegeary posted a link earlier to a bustle.com article that includes recommendations for Asian American history, too. I'll try to find it and tag you. One of the books was 7y
queerbookreader @DGRachel I just saw it, thank you so much! 7y
Bibliogeekery Sending queer 💓 to you!! Glad this is a space you can be yourself. Hope you find more of them. 😘 7y
BookishFeminist You rock 💓 thanks for being you. 😘 7y
queerbookreader @saresmoore You're honestly a phenomenal friend for doing that. I don't even want to be out to the friends I do have cos it would be messy so you must be a wonderful resource to her!! I'm just like "lol girl u splurged now but u can't afford to buy any more books on your own" so idk how to get access to the books I want to read. Without like. Outing myself or spending all the money I don't even have. Lmao 7y

Yamich49 💗💗 I know how hard it can be to come out, even on the Internet where you don't know most of the people IRL. So happy that you feel comfortable on Litsy - it's such a supportive community here. And I don't read a ton of manga but I do read a lot of queer books so if you ever see one of my posts with a book you would like to read, let me know and I would be happy to send it/lend it to you. Maybe we could start a #queerbookshare group or something- 7y
Yamich49 I know there are plenty of queer youth (and adults) who can't access queer books for whatever reason and it is SO IMPORTANT to have access to these stories. ❤️❤️ 7y
Soubhiville @Yamich49 I'd be in for a #queernookshare! @lemonlime799 I don't have any bi books, but I have some others you might be interested in borrowing. I'm out to my parents, but didn't come out until I was in my mid 20's. (I'm 41 now. Also bi. ). Let me know if you'd like a list of what I have. 💖 7y
queerbookreader @Soubhiville @Yamich49 I've never done a book share before but I would be interested in maybe trying! 7y
Yamich49 @Soubhiville @lemonlime799 Awesome! I've never really done one before but what I'm thinking is we could start like a google doc spreadsheet and have people put queer books on there that they'd be willing to share and their email so if there is a book that you're really wanting to read but don't have access to, we can email the person and see if they'll send it to you. And then hope the person eventually sends it back? 😆 or... We could have people 7y
Soubhiville I have 3 off the top of my head, I'll look at my shelves tomorrow and see if there are more. I'd be willing to send you one at a time, then we can swap them when you're done with them. #1- 7y
Yamich49 @Soubhiville @lemonlime799 put on there if they even need the book back. I love making lists and such so let me throw together a spreadsheet then I'll share the link with you two and then see if anyone else is interested? I think we could do it as shared only with people who request the link that we are sure aren't trolls so we don't have to worry about any hateful things ending up on there. Not that I really worry about that with Litsy folks lol 7y
Soubhiville My email is magicbelly gmail.com. Let me know if you'd like me to mail one of these and give me your address and I'll send it off 😊 7y
Soubhiville That sounds great @Yamich49 ! 7y

Yamich49 @Soubhiville oooo good picks! I'll send you all the link later tonight! And add some that I have. Then we can solicit other Litsy folks, there are tons of awesome people on here who read fantastic queer books that I'm sure would be happy to join in. 7y

bookishkai @Yamich49 @Soubhiville @lemonlime799 I want to be in on a queer book share! I'm knittycat99 at gmail dot com; I have LOTS of books to share. And I remember well being desperate for books to read, and unable to get them at my library. Hiding the ones I did have, bought on the sly after my weekly SAT prep class, in my room, almost dying one day when a cleaning lady found them and left them in a pile on my bed. 7y
Yamich49 @bookishkris @Soubhiville Awesome! I've sent both of you the link to the Google sheet - feel free to add books as you have time and/or send the invite link to anyone who might be interested. @lemonlime799 I can add you if you want to give me your mail. You can also email me at rezgirlreads at gmail.com and I'll send you the link that way! 7y
Yamich49 @bookishkris Right? I remember trying to hide queer books too - although some of the covers make it pretty obvious what they're about. My tiny library here in the boonies definitely does not have a good queer book selection so I'm grateful that I'm at a point now where I can usually buy the books I want to read (esp queer ones). It wasn't always that way for sure. 7y
Serotonin I've actually come across some recommended yuri manga - NTR and Bloom Into You. I've ordered them and am excited for when they arrive 😉 7y
queerbookreader @Serotonin I thiiiink I've heard of Bloom into You! Did you order the complete sets? I just bought v.1 of Citrus and the first collection of Strawberry Panic (and a few others but I can't remember right now haha) 7y
