Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe | Benjamin Alire Saenz
This Printz Honor Book is a tender, honest exploration of identity (Publishers Weekly) that distills lyrical truths about family and friendship.Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendshipthe kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be.

Lin Manuel Miranda's narration helped bump this to a pick for me. It's a well-written and needed book, but I'm not the target audience so it didn't resonante with me as much.

Cinfhen I can see why listening to Lin would make a book a pick!!! 3w

1. I am a mood reader. By that I mean that I have come to realize that I can pick up a book at random, read a bit and suddenly that is the book I am in the mood for.

2. I chose to listen to this because it was the first on my Hoopla favorites list (I'm just listening in order.

3. When did chapter timers show up? Is this for every book or just some?

hes7 I noticed the chapters in the last month or so, but there have been a few that haven‘t had them still. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 4w
Sace @hes7 there weren't any for the last book I listened to. I like knowing how far until the chapter is over. 4w
Amiable I‘m totally a mood reader, too. That explains why I have so many unread books sitting on my shelves for YEARS. I don‘t know when I‘ll be in the mood to read them, so I have to keep them handy! 😀 4w
Sace @Amiable I used to feel the same way but over the past month I've started just grabbing a book without thinking and reading it. I generally end up "in the mood" for that book. If I wait and try to figure out what I'm in the mood for I end up not reading at all. ? 4w

Ari and Dante leave their growing pains on these pages. Trying to piece together who they are, who their parents are and how they fit into a world that defines them as Mexican Americans in the 1980s. Ari cover a lot of ground when it comes to secrets of the universe and really digs deep into himself and his family to find those answers. The language and vibe of the book make for a quick read.
I absolutely adore this book and these characters ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Young Adult Fiction, Bildungsroman
2019 10 17
2019 10 25
I was aiming for good novel content, and because I never saw a bad review about the book, I decided to read about it.

1ReVeluvY Aristotle and Dante discovered the secrets of the universe.
During one summer, these two distinct characters meet. Aristotle and Dante find out who they are throughout the book. As teenagers, there are many questions and confusion as to what they are meant for. Especially at times when they are distracted with their own issues, it becomes a challenge for them to discover the secrets of the universe.
3mo
1ReVeluvY Aristotle (Ari): He lives with his mom, dad, and has older sisters. He feels distant to his older sisters because of the age gap they have. On the other hand, Ari has a hard time connecting with his father after his dad came back from the war when he was still little. Meanwhile, he also has a brother who is in jail but he doesn't exactly know the reason why because his parents don't talk about him. Therefore, he feels lonely until he met Dante. (edited) 3mo
1ReVeluvY Dante: Dante seems almost perfect to Ari. He is thoughtful, artistic, smart, likes poetry, curious, etc. However, he doesn't feel like he found himself yet. Although he tries to face the challenges he was within his family and friends, he also questions about his sexuality.

3mo
1ReVeluvY At the end, Ari finally realizes that he liked Dante ever since they met. Almost every conversation was filled with laughter. Why did Ari save Dante from a brutal accident? That was just one of the reasons showing how affectionate the two are. As they overcome the coming of age stage in life, they were able to learn from the flaws that their family and friends have. They made their love for one another official at the very end. 3mo

A really good book I enjoyed listening to in 1 day. #lgbtq #comingofage #ya #diversereads

I know I‘m late to the #BFCr3 check-in, but it was a bit of a crazy day. My friend got hired Thursday at a new school and they have open house on Monday, so we went in to help her setup her room...all day.😔 so I didn‘t get my mental health goal in today, like I had planned, but I surpassed my 77,000 steps goal, I only drank 1 sugary drink, and read 1 book.

TheBookAddict I forgot I was supposed to track water intake, but I do know that I at least met that 64oz water goal half of the week. I also worked out Monday - Friday, no yoga though. #BFC (edited) 5mo

I liked this book because it portrays voices that are not usually heard. It's enjoyable but I thought that some parts of the story didn't seem to flow together well. I also didn't like the ending, which I think may have been the whole point of the story 🤣 so maybe it's not for me 🤷‍♀️

This book has been in my stack for YEARS and I‘m sad I just finally read it. I stayed up last night and finished it... and I was only halfway done. 😬 Such a good story about finding yourself, family relationships and relationships with others. A good “LGBTQ” story that takes place in 1987 that teaches a wonderful lesson of acceptance and love.

Can something be both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time? This finally made it to the top of my tbr after reading a buzfeed columnist who said she was 6yrs late finding this book, but now won't leave home without the book AND audio book versions with her. And as far as literary security blankets go this is a good choice with its loving, warm parental figures, sweeping, powerful emotions and earnest, endearing honesty. #pridemonth

This was a great contemporary, coming of age, YA book. It takes place in the late 80s between two Mexican teens. There's a bit too much "talking about feelings" for my liking, but I'd bet even Aristotle would agree with me. Talking feelings is way more of Dante's type of thing. I really liked the family aspect here where Aristotle is realizing that his parents are more than just parents. They are real people with real emotions and a tough history.
