The Immorality Engine
The Immorality Engine | George Mann

On the surface, life is going well for Victorian special agent Sir Maurice Newbury, who has brilliantly solved several nigh-impossible cases for Queen Victoria with his indomitable assistant, Miss Veronica Hobbes, by his side. But these facts haven't stopped Newbury from succumbing increasingly frequently to his dire flirtation with the lure of opium. His addiction is fueled in part by his ill-gotten knowledge of Veronica's secret relationship with the queen, which Newbury fears must be some kind of betrayal. Veronica, consumed by worry and care for her prophetic but physically fragile sister Amelia, has no idea that she is a catalyst for Newbury's steadily worsening condition. Veronica and Newbury's dear friend Bainbridge, the Chief Investigator at Scotland Yard, tries to cover for him as much as possible, but when the body of a well known criminal turns up, Bainbridge and Veronica track Newbury down in an opium den and drag him out to help them with the case. The body is clearly, irrefutably, that of the man in question, but shortly after his body is brought to the morgue, a crime is discovered that bears all the dead man's hallmarks. Bainbridge and Veronica fear someone is committing copycat crimes, but Newbury is not sure. Somehow, the details are too perfect for it to be the work of a copycat. But how can a dead man commit a crime? At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

This book is full of lots of action and twists. The Zombie plague is pretty much in the background, so like our current situation, but there is a plot afoot that Maurice and Veronica must stop and they must save Veronica‘s sister. The darkness is spreading and Queen Victoria‘s most loyal agents must decide where they stand-on the side of the Queen or the side of the future of England. 3/5 stars, read if you like steampunk and/or Sherlock.

@MaleficentBookDragon I am so sorry I didn‘t post this yesterday. I was struck with food poisoning and it just got worse.

I love everything. I know how to knit felt and appreciate the new pattern book but I have always wanted to learn to needle felt. I‘m excited. #makerswap

And everything else—-AMAZEBALLS. I‘ll be keeping the book sleeve as a book sleeve. It will get way more use. Thank you so much for everything.

Another solid Newbury & Hobbes. I 🖤💙🖤 these Steampunk adventures.
But, I am trying to pace myself in reading them because I just don't want it all to end.
Anyone else like this series?

I'm in a slump again. This is the third book I'm trying since Thursday.
I'm pretty sure that this one will snap me out of it. I love Newbury & Hobbes. I've been trying to space them out because I don't know what I'll do when I'm done with the series.
I believe the first book in the series was a #SFMBC selection. Thank you to whoever it was who introduced me to these! 🙏
Hades is not impressed.

For the first time in a long while I actually had an evening to myself and finished 2 books! A Nancy Drew audiobook read by Laura Linney and a steampunk fantasy by George Mann. Both were good books. Life has been kicking my butt which is why I always turn to fantasy and mystery to help me get through.

1. I don't have a favorite movie from when I was 10. My parents controlled the TV.
2. French fries everyday!
3. I've been listening to the album H2O by Dan Gibson's Solitudes. It's ambient new age music that has been helping me relax.
4. Done. More steampunk mystery.
5. On it! 👍#FriYayIntro @jesshowbooks
