Be More Chill
Be More Chill | Ned Vizzini
Jeremy Heere is your average high school dork. Day after day, he stares at beautiful Christine, the girl he can never have, and dryly notes the small humiliations that come his way. Until the day he learns about the 'squip.' A pill-sized supercomputer that you swallow, the squip is guaranteed to bring you whatever you most desire in life. By instructing him on everything from what to wear, to how to talk and walk, the squip transforms Jeremy from Supergeek to superchic.

Listened to the book because my teenager likes the musical based on the book. It was ok. Apparently the musical is more dramatic 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wish I read this as a teen, as I know I would have liked it a lot more. I appreciated the humor. It doesn't hold a candle to It's Kind of a Funny Story, which I have read both in my teens and adulthood.

But it was still pretty good.

The most perfect detail of this new BSC is that musical-lover Mary Anne gets a Be More Chill poster in her newly redecorated room. I can just see this shy, emotional girl rocking out to I Love Play Rehearsal and Michael in the Bathroom and making her own Creeps shirt and stanning the whole cast. This tracks 100%. Way to go, Rachel Shukert. #bsc #babysittersclub #bscnetflix #seemoretheatre #bemorechill #thebabysittersclub

LiteraryinPA I think your posts are making me want to watch the BSC series. These books were such a big part of my early reading life! 4y
Andrea313 @LiteraryinLititz Same here! These were so foundational for me. I think this reboot gets so many things right- the cast is perfection, and the updated 2020 setting (and accompanying issues) don't feel forced; they stay in line with the simplicity of the books and the way the characters grow and learn throughout. The series gets a solid A from me. I'd love to hear your take! 4y

This book is beyond relatable for any awkward teen. The story follows socially unacceptable Jeremy Heere as he navigates high school. Campy with a sci fi twist, a true must read

I read this after a student told me I should get a copy for my classroom library... not quite for middle schoolers, but an interesting and unique storyline. I enjoyed the plot and there were definitely “I can‘t put this book down” moments... but the ending was frustrating. I wanted SO much more. I enjoyed the book, but there were a few irritating aspects of it for sure.

So last week when I was in my feelings about Be More Chill closing my husband surprised me with a copy of the Broadway tie-in edition and a trip to Pinkberry in Austin. 💚💖💚

⭐⭐⭐

I totally get some of the negative reviews from people like myself who fell in love with the musical. There's problematic elements for sure, but I am glad that this book exists. The fact that Ned wrote this before the first iPhone shows how forward thinking he was regarding technology. Without this book the musical and subsequent community that grew around it would not exist. RIP Ned and happy closing day BMC

brandymuses My 14 year old is obsessed with this and just got to see it on Broadway. She loved it so much and was able to meet George Salazar. (I sadly didn‘t get to seek as her dad went with her while I took our younger one to see Lion King.) 6y
Booksblanketsandahotbeverage @brandymuses Wow! That's really cool! I love live theater ❤️🎭😁 6y

What to say? I think he was aiming for satire; instead it wound up being some pretty mysoginistic trash. In the book's own words- shutdown.

1. My TomCat in a box. Pretty much all my photos are of my cats, tbh.
2. Fulfilling my "YA nerd" and "musical theatre nerd" proclivities in one fell swoop with Ned Vizzini's Be More Chill.
3. Heading to a friend's cabin this weekend where we will mostly read in companionable silence for two days and I can't wait!
4. A red marker.
5. ? Cheer up, Hamlet/chin up, Hamlet/buck up, you melancholy Dane... ?

Thanks, @MinDea!

Andrea313 @quietjenn I was so hoping to find another fan out there! It's probably my favorite show. I highly support your re-watch! 6y

Very good! I love Vizzini‘s style and wit, and the interesting plot twist the story took. The Squips were something new and innovative, and while it was hilarious to read, it provided thought and had heart. I loved it, and I would recommend if you‘ve read Vizzini before, or if you like YA
