Mrs. Kennedy and Me
Mrs. Kennedy and Me: An Intimate Memoir | Clint Hill, Lisa McCubbin
The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir by Clint Hill that Kirkus Reviews called clear and honest prose free from salaciousness and gossip, Jackie Kennedys personal Secret Service agent details his very close relationship with the First Lady during the four years leading up to and following President John F. Kennedys tragic assassination. In those four years, Hill was by Mrs. Kennedys side for some of the happiest moments as well as the darkest. He was there for the birth of John, Jr. on November 25, 1960, as well as for the birth and sudden death of Patrick Bouvier Kennedy on August 8, 1963. Three and a half months later, the unthinkable happened. Forty-seven years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the one vivid image that never leaves Clint Hills mind is that of President Kennedys head lying on Mrs. Kennedys lap in the back seat of the limousine, his eyes fixed, blood splattered all over the back of the car, Mrs. Kennedy, and Hill as well. Sprawled on the trunk of the car as it sped away from Dealey Plaza, Hill clung to the sides of the car, his feet wedged in so his body was as high as possible. Clint Hill jumped on the car too late to save the president, but all he knew after that first shot was that if more shots were coming, the bullets had to hit him instead of the First Lady. Mrs. Kennedys strength, class, and dignity over those tragic four days in November 1963 held the country together. This is the story, told for the first time, of the man who perhaps held her together.

I know this is a memoir, but it‘s a history book, as well. Clint Hill is the secret service agent that was assigned to Jacqueline Kennedy. He is the man you might recall who jumps onto the back of the convertible to push Mrs Kennedy back to safety. …It is so interesting to have his record of this historical time. A great read for the the 4th!

Cathythoughts Sounds good 👍🏻❤️ 3y
marleed @Cathythoughts It was fascinating to read how his respect for Mrs Kennedy (what he called her and how he always referred to her) grew. It‘s also a very non-partisan recounting and in today‘s climate, and an unintentional reminder of how important it is to keep politics out of the jobs of those who are called to protect the folks residing in a nation. 3y

“For the important position of attorney general, President Kennedy announced that he was appointing his brother Bobby... his only government experience was as counsel of the Senate Rackets Committee. It was the first time in U.S. history that a president or president-elect had chosen a brother for his cabinet. While it was not illegal, the decision certainly raised eyebrows throughout the political arena.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author, Clint Hill, is from a small town in North Dakota, about 30 miles from where I live and grew up. I have always admired Jackie Kennedy for her intelligence, grace and style. Clint Hill‘s life and career are an inspiration. I have read all of his books and applaud each one! 🇺🇸

In honor of the date, I‘ve elected to share some of my favorite books about JFK. 11/22/63 is fictional, and one of my favorite books. I‘m not typically a huge King fan, but this is an exception. The Bugliosi book is a very comprehensive book about the assassination and its aftermath. The other two are memoirs and give good insight into the Kennedy lifestyle.

JenReadsAlot Great books! 7y

wrenaymuhree I agree—11/22/63 is one of my all-time favorites! I‘m not a huge King fan, either...not really into horror. 7y

I have so many words, and yet I'm speechless. I've read Mr. Hill's other two books and yet this one still made me cry. My heart breaks for the pain this man endured for decades after the assassination of JFK and the guilt he felt all this time. The Kennedy family has had the worst luck and it's so heartbreaking to read about the worst day of their lives. Highly recommend this book. Stay tuned for a full review on the blog! Link in bio!

Clint Hill was a secret service agent in charge of protecting Mrs Kennedy during the three years of JFK's presidency. This memoir begins in 1960 when the two first meet and leads all the way to JFK's assassination. Clint Hill can be seen in this picture leaping on to the president's car just seconds after the fatal shots. I was born 20 years after the assassination, but it haunts me. It has been over 50 years ago, but grief and tragedy remain.

Cinfhen Sounds like a fascinating read😍 8y
Laura317 I never saw this photo before. Such a sad day for America. 8y

Reviewsbylola I know! I never paid attention to the secret service agents but in his detailing of the assassination, Mr Hill describes noticing the first shot and leaping off his car and diving in the back of the president car. It was caught on the Zapruder film I believe so I need to go watch it. @Laura317 8y
Laura317 I think so, too! @Reviewsbylola 8y
Cortg I'll have to read this! My neighbor just retired from the secret service a few months ago. I also had a neighbor and a friend from our last house in VA that were secret service. I find them intriguing, especially when I get little blurbs about the President or Vice President :) 8y

Reading this on my overdrive app and I just read the chapter where baby Patrick was born and passed away. I couldn't stop the tears. So incredibly heartbreaking, especially knowing what will happen three months later. 💔💔💔

Suet624 I read another Clint Hill book. He's had a front row seat to a lot of events. I want to find this book. 8y

Had an interesting discussion yesterday at my book club about this book. One thing is the lack of a home life the Secret Service agents experienced.

Gulfsidemusing My sister recommended this to me, but I haven't been in a hurry to read it. 8y
