Language Files: Materials for an Introduction to Language & Linguistics | Nick Cipollone, Steven Hartman Keiser, Ohio State University. Dept. of Linguistics
8 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
This unique collection features in-depth material on the core areas of introductory linguistics; an innovative format that allows instructors to determine easily the order of topics to be covered; practice exercises and problems, with explanatory answers provided for a selected number; and an instructor's manual that includes information about the use of the files, answers to problems, and suggested answers to selected discussion questions. The 7th edition features new or revised material on semantics, Ebonics, language and gender, and machine translation. It also provides a chart to allow easy comparison of the American traditional phonetic alphabet and the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Brenley Jealous! I've got two more weeks before Spring Break... 😩 8y

Let me just go ahead and stop you at "examine scientifically" because WHY oh WHY is Linguistics a required course for my MA???

auntie_jenn i took it as an undergrad because it fulfilled a math/logic requirement...better than calculus, right? 8y
EmilyM I had to take it for my Master's....Not my favorite class. 8y
hwheaties @auntie_jenn I did, too! It was required for my English BA. I don't get why I have to take it AGAIN. 8y
hwheaties @EmilyM same so far. I mean it's cool in a way but also there are right and wrong answers so... 8y
readinginthedark When I took it, my teacher talked a lot about the arguments between the English and linguistics programs, specifically because the English program believed there were right and wrong answers but the linguistics program did not. 8y

Can't tell you how much I appreciate a textbook with super-wide margins so I can annotate as much as I please. Also please excuse my messy handwriting.

Suzze You write just like I do! Often I don't connect all the letters. Sort of a print/cursive hybrid. 8y
hwheaties @Suzze exactly! normally I go full cursive (like in letters and stuff), but when I'm writing "casually" I don't worry about it as much. 8y
kim.guernsey If that's messy, then mine is a wreck! I think your handwriting is lovely. 8y
PatienceFortitude This is why I'm dubious when a school switches to e-books for textbooks. Writing in the margins is such an important part of how I learn and remember what I read! I ❤paper textbooks 8y
minkyb Excellent point about wide margins! 8y

Here we go, grad school reading! Getting ahead thanks to a snow day.

LyndseyReads I have a snow day, too! ❄️❄️❄️ 8y
Aswenson Cheers to #2! Sometimes there's no better way to go about expressing something... 😉 8y
hwheaties @LyndseyReads snow days are THE BEST. I was in my pajamas until 330. 8y

This is how I mark the assigned reading passages. I mean, who wouldn't, right? And who could resist, after all? There are a lot more little owlets than just this one, but I go for consistency--one owl per book. Ha.

hwheaties @CaitZ Sure thing! I 8y
Coleen This is the cutest picture! 8y
hwheaties @Coleen Thank you! I love the little owl stickers. They make reading dry textbooks a bit less sucky! 8y

I've just turned in the final assignment for my second class in my MA (the requisite research course) so naturally I'm going to go all Hermione and start reading for my next class, Linguistics, which begins in January.

HAHAHAHAHAHA just kidding I'm going to read Shadowshaper.

But I will start reading early, let's be real.
NB: Litsy only had 7th edition.
