#PoetryMatters

Love the imagery and how Longfellow uses the tide to depict life and death.

The rhythm of this poem is perfect. I can hear the waves in my head when it‘s read out loud. #rise #poetrymatters @TheSpineView @TheSpineView

This 1870 four-volume edition of “the Complete Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow” includes, among many others, the epic poem “Evangeline,” which was considered a #masterpiece at the time. Perhaps it still is. This set was passed down to me by my grandfather in 2000; it appears to have been purchased new and lived in the family library for the preceding 130 years.

Lcsmcat Wow! I remember reading Evangeline the summer after 8th grade. My mother would send me out of the house to try to make me socialize at the neighborhood pool, and I‘d stick my (paperback) copy in my bag and just read. Happy memories. 7y

ReadZenRites Thank you @Lcsmcat @CoverToCoverGirl and @merelybookish 😊💕 Some fun trivia: Evangeline was used in Disney‘s “the Princess and the Frog” movie as the basis for the fireflies‘ love story. ✨ 7y

Even when a book has almost no life left, even when it would take a true act of love to read through the unbound and crumbling pages - it is still a work of art. A well-loved book is a thing of beauty.

Alas, I did not get to visit his home or the bookstore (presumably) named after him. But this plaque was at Portland Head Lighthouse.

kspenmoll Nice! A future day trip for me! 8y
GeekGrl82 I was just there earlier this month! The bookstore is a nice one. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @kspenmoll @geekgrl82 I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this city. All the books!!! Hopefully I'll get to hit the rest of the bookstores also next time 😊 8y
