Blue Plate Special
Blue Plate Special: An Autobiography of My Appetites | Kate Christensen
From acclaimed novelist Kate Christensen, Blue Plate Special is a mouthwatering literary memoir about an unusual upbringing and the long, winding path to happiness. To taste fully is to live fully. For Kate Christensen, food and eating have always been powerful connectors to self and worlda subterranean conduit to sensuality, memory, desire. Her appetites run deep; in her own words, she spent much of her life as a hungry, lonely, wild animal looking for happiness and stability. Now, having found them at last, in this passionate feast of a memoir she reflects upon her journey of innocence lost and wisdom gained, mistakes made and lessons learned, and hearts broken and mended. In the tradition of M. F. K. Fisher, Laurie Colwin, and Ruth Reichl, Blue Plate Special is a narrative in which foodeating it, cooking it, reflecting on itbecomes the vehicle for unpacking a life. Christensen explores her history of hungernot just for food but for love and confidence and a sense of belongingwith a profound honesty, starting with her unorthodox childhood in 1960s Berkeley as the daughter of a mercurial legal activist who ruled the house with his fists. After a whirlwind adolescent awakening, Christensen strikes out to chart her own destiny within the literary world and the world of men, both equally alluring and dangerous. Food of all kinds, from Ho Hos to haute cuisine, remains an evocative constant throughout, not just as sustenance but as a realm of experience unto itself, always reflective of what is going on in her life. She unearths memoriessometimes joyful, sometimes painfulof the love between mother and daughter, sister and sister, and husband and wife, and of the times when the bonds of love were broken. Food sustains her as she endures the pain of these ruptures and fuels her determination not to settle for anything less than the love and contentment for which shes always yearned. The physical and emotional sensuality that defines Christensens fiction resonates throughout the pages of Blue Plate Special. A vibrant celebration of life in all its truth and complexity, this book is about embracing the world through the transformative power of food: its about listening to your appetites, about having faith, and about learning what is worth holding on to and what is not.

Far more memoir than foodie book. I haven't read any of Kate Christensen's novels, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It is kind of interesting, how the child of hippies, from a broken home, moved all over lived and grew up into an adult and how she remembers food connected to this life. Not one that I would have normally picked up but it came in one of the Book Rot boxes.

Guys, it's so bad. Halfway through, and life is too short.

If I have to read one more passage about her pouring a glass of whole milk down her throat, I'm going to be legit sick.

I couldn't put it down. I found it to be a wonderfully insightful and reflective memoir. The author has had a difficult, inspiring and amazing life full of travel, food, art and people. I'm sitting here kind of jealous at the moment and may or may not be writing to her asking to be adopted 😂⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and since I have never read anything written by her I am now on the hunt. Btw this memoir has nothing and everything to do with food.

On call today so I have to stick close to home. Perfect for a day of reading, cooking and cleaning . New read I'm starting today right after I whip up some banana bread.

Overall I was really not a fan of this book. It felt very flippant and non-self-aware. I'm not entirely sure why I finished it. I did enjoy this reminiscence of childhood sleepovers though.

Exhausting at times, but isn't that like life. Honest and heartfelt. I loved to see the recipes that Kate associated with different times in her life. A couple times, I got a kick of insight into my own life. I received this book in my #outofprint box (love this box!)🍴

I had not heard of this book until I received it as part of my #bookmailbox. The author uses food as a motif to illustrate her experiences as a member of a dysfunctional family and as an emerging writer. She does a particularly good job depicting the conflicting desires of companionship versus solitude. Since I'm not a foodie, I can't evaluate the included recipes, but I can suggest consuming her prose.

While it held my interest enough to read the whole thing (I rarely give up a book entirely), it did not live up to the description of a food memoir. The sub-title is not accurate because she very often didn't have any appetite at all. I never felt any real connection between her experiences and the food that was sometimes described. #foodmemoir #notafoodmemoir

A very detailed autobiography, told both through the food that resonated with a certain time period of her life, and the place she was living at the time. I appreciate her ability to inspect her flaws and shortcomings as thoroughly as those of others.

Another food-related memoir that has me reading faster than usual. So far the writing is engaging and interesting, and it's off to a fast start even though it begins with Kate's childhood. Already loving it!

Search my name on YouTube to find my channel and watch me unbox the first Book Mail collab by @outofprint and @bookriot! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this unboxing and how perfect the theme is for me. 😀

BooksTeasAndBookishThings I kind of expected more for $60. But, I am sure all of the food lovers loved it since I doubt any of the other subscriptions have ever had that theme. 9y
ChristieStratos @BooksTeasAndBookishThings I loved it, but I was a little disappointed there weren't a couple more things in it. It didn't seem like $60 to me either. 9y

Leelee08 @razmanda Both are books we read in my food-themed book club, so they were new to me as well! Yes, Chef was more food-oriented, while Blue Plate Special was more dramatic memoir. Enjoy!!😄 9y

I just got my @bookriot box in the mail and it is food-themed and I am so excited and also I am way amused that this bookmark is just a word away from my favorite parenting bible, Eat Sleep Poop.
