The name,Thomas Merton, seems to pop up in my world quite often. Sometimes it is in a book that I‘m reading, or an article online and even quotes on the TV screen for a music station that is often on. A good friend highly recommended this book. It has been sitting on my shelves for years. Born in France, educated at Cambridge and Columbia, having lived a life filled with travel, adventure and many friends,Thomas decided he wanted a simple life.

Cinfhen I love book karma / sounds like a fascinating read 💞🤗 2y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen 👋🏻 As do I! ❤️ 2y

Suet624 💕💕💕Merton. His life story was kind of sad at the end so I‘m glad he wrote this book while he had it in him. 2y
DivineDiana @suet624 I am sorry to hear that. I know he died at 53 in Thailand, but I don‘t know the details. He wrote 50 books in 27 years. This one was chosen by the National Review as one of the top 100 nonfiction books of the century. (edited) 2y
Librarybelle Good choice! 2y
DivineDiana @Librarybelle Thank you📚🙂 2y
Suet624 @DivineDiana it‘s definitely a good one. I‘ve read it several times during periods when I needed to hear his voice through his words. 2y

Finally reading this book. It‘s one of those books I keep seeing referenced and quoted, so it‘s time to see what the buzz is all about.

The monastery should be the home of #BenevolentBrothers. #newyearnewyou @Eggs

GingerAntics This has been on my TBR for ages. Have you read it? What did you think? 5y
Lcsmcat I have and I liked it. My favorite quote is “If you don‘t want the effect, do something to remove the causes. There is no use loving the cause and fearing the effect and being surprised when the effect inevitably follows the cause.” I want to read his more mature work but haven‘t gotten around to it yet. 5y
Eggs I love the quote-pragmatic!! 5y

Thoroughly enjoyed this one, after years of seeing it waiting for me on my shelf.

Literature speaks of the fundamental things: life, death, time, love, sorrow, fear, wisdom, suffering, eternity.

davidjoseph Found a copy of Seven Storey at a library book sale recently...and Signet's Complete Shakespeare. Good to know they belonged together! 6y
jessamyngrace @davidjoseph That's pretty neat! 6y

I‘m not sure which of Merton‘s books this quote is from...just going by my (perhaps somewhat feeble) memories from grad school...sorry if I‘m wrong. 🤷🏽‍♀️

The devil is no fool. He can get people feeling about heaven the way they ought to feel about hell. He can make them fear the means of grace the way they do not fear sin. And he does so, not by light but by obscurity, not by realities but by shadows, not by clarity and substance but by dreams and creatures of psychosis.

Fruitful trip to the Bryan Mawr Bookstore in Cambridge, MA. *Two* books about Zoroastrianism?

DivineDiana I am interested in reading Thomas Merton. 7y
saresmoore Ooh, excellent! 7y
TimSpalding I read Merton decades ago—before I became a Catholic. I‘m interested how my memories match up. 7y

I so wish my library had a copy of this. I can‘t say I‘m surprised, though. It‘s not exactly the “brand” of Christianity of the loudest voices in the community. #sevenstoreymountain #thomasmerton #library #libraryfail #autobiography
