The Woman on the Stairs
The Woman on the Stairs | Bernhard Schlink
For decades the painting was believed to be lost. But, just as mysteriously as it disappeared, it reappears, an anonymous donation to a gallery in Sydney. The art world is stunned but so are the three men who loved the woman in the painting, the woman on the stairs. One by one they track her down to an isolated cottage in Australia. Here they must try to untangle the lies and betrayals of their shared past - but time is running out. The Woman on the Stairs is an intricately-crafted, poignant and beguiling novel about creativity and love, about the effects of time passing and the regrets that haunt us all.

Yesterday‘s scores from the Little Red St Library. Big step daughter is a teen now & starting to be interested in 📚 with ❤️ in them. Yesterday she watched Twilight for the 1st time. She‘s hooked. I just wish she read the 📕 1st. She‘s also taking forensic science next yr. so picked out the CSI 📖. We had a girl‘s night, without their daddy, last night, which they loved. I let them stay up late as they assured me they would sleep in. They didn‘t!

I really disliked this. It had an interesting premise but I never found any of it believable. I would have bailed if I hadn't been reading it for #LMPBC. Sorry #GroupZ

#BookReport Cricket watching and travelling has eaten into my reading time this week so I've only read this and the first 124 pages of The Most Fun We Ever Had (much more enjoyable)

#WeeklyForecast Finish The Most... and then, hmmm, not sure actually🤔 Something light I think.

LeeRHarry Different books for different folks ? Mmm that nearly rhymes 😏 I am flying through your pick for our group 💕 5y
CarolynM @Cinfhen I like it a lot. It is very believable, which is quite a contrast with The Woman on the Stairs! 5y

I hated this book so much... I found it at a book sale, benefiting a local animal rescue. The cover and intro seemed promising. NO! It had a very slow start, a less than pleasing climax, ending very poorly. It didn't feel finished either. Which, I'm shocked I got to the end.

Don't waste your time

CarolynM Agreed. It was really bad☹️ 5y

Soooo disappointed in this one. I loved The Reader and am perfectly happy with simple writing, but there really didn‘t seem to be any point to this. Three men are obsessed with a woman who was the muse to one of them, producing a famous painting. This is the fragmented but potentially promising start, but then it hops around with no real purpose.

I can't say that I enjoyed this book, even though I couldn't seem to put it down. The prose is beautiful and I appreciated the complexity of the narrator's memories and emotional landscape, but, ultimately, the whole thing felt a bit self-indulgent. Not awful, just kind of pointless.

I'm not quite sure what to make of this book. It was such an awkward start, with a young attorney involved in a ludicrous contract, falling immediately in love with a mysterious women. I had a very hard time buying into the storyline and never particularly liked the protagonist. But there's something compelling about Schlink's simple and direct writing. I finished this in two sittings. This book finished stronger than it began.

Schlink makes me paranoid. Another book about making sense of the past, untangling threads, confronting your own failings. Is that what's in store? Am I just going to be one big stew of regret and late-onset guilt when I'm in the nursing home??
