Novels, Tales, Journeys: The Complete Prose of Alexander Pushkin
Novels, Tales, Journeys: The Complete Prose of Alexander Pushkin | Alexander Pushkin
10 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 27 to read
From the award-winning translators: the complete prose narratives of the most acclaimed Russian writer of the Romantic era and one of the world's greatest storytellers. The father of Russian literature, Pushkin is beloved not only for his poetry but also for his brilliant stories, which range from dramatic tales of love, obsession, and betrayal to dark fables and sparkling comic masterpieces, from satirical epistolary tales and romantic adventures in the manner of Sir Walter Scott to imaginative historical fiction and the haunting dreamworld of "The Queen of Spades." The five short stories of The Late Tales of Ivan Petrovich Belkin are lightly humorous and yet reveal astonishing human depths, and his short novel, The Captain's Daughter, has been called the most perfect book in Russian literature.

December 19: The Snowstorm by Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837). This story first appeared in his collection The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belton in 1831. The story is translated by T. Keane.

Two star-crossed lovers decide to elope to get married. The only problem is that the day they choose, there‘s a snowstorm. I didn‘t see the twist at the end.

AnneCecilie I completely forgot that no 19 was the #BookSpin no. Making this my book spin read for December @TheAromaofBooks 3y

Pickpick

I‘ve been intimidated by Russian literature for a long time but I finally started with this collection! I loved it. “Dubrovsky” and “The Captain‘s Daughter” were my favorite. I definitely recommend Pushkin and this book is a great way to explore his works!

#TBRtemptation post 2! Considered the father of Russian literature, Pushkin is loved for his poetry and also his stories, ranging from dramatic love stories to comical tales to satirical epistolaries. This volume includes all of his prose with well-praised new translations of such masterpieces as "The Queen of Spades" and "The Tales of the Late Ivan Petrovich Belkin". #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

And just how—HOW, I ask you—was I supposed to leave this book lonesome on the bottom shelf at the bookstore? It would have been a gross injustice (read: responsible decision). Fortunately, I'm neither unjust nor responsible and this lovely edition is now safe in my home. 😊

britt_brooke Love this cover! 7y
saresmoore @britt_brooke Isn't it fun? I love the fonts and it incorporates my two favorite colors. I call that serendipity. 7y
SharonGoforth Well you just couldn't! (I couldn't, either 😊) 7y

saresmoore @SharonGoforth It seems we're both on a Russian kick! I think it might be more of a lifelong affliction for me. 😁 7y
vivastory You did your bibliophile duty 7y
saresmoore @vivastory I appreciate your friendly enabling. 🙃 Oh! I saw a book via @ReadingEnvy on Goodreads today that made me think of you. Have you read it? 7y
vivastory @saresmoore I have it, but haven't read it yet. Looks interesting though. 7y
LeahBergen You just had to. It's simple. 🙂 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen I have a minimalist wardrobe and continually pare down areas of my home, but I live by these words of wisdom: Life is short, buy the book! 7y
SharonGoforth @saresmoore I've been interested in Russian history for a long time. I've read some Russian lit, but there's a lot of it that I haven't read yet. Tolstoy is on my list for this year with Anna Karenina. 7y
QuintusMarcus Love these translators. I've got the book, but haven't read it yet. 7y
saresmoore @SharonGoforth I highly recommend Anna Karenina by these translators (Pevear & Volokhonsky). It's practically a different book in their brilliant translation! There's a ton I haven't read, too. This year, the big one I plan to tackle is 7y
SharonGoforth @saresmoore That's the translation I have. I spent a good couple of hours in the bookstore trying to decide which one to buy. Looked up all kinds of reviews, articles, etc. I also bought their translation of War & Peace. Have you read any of the other translations? I was wondering if it is worth getting them in order to compare? (I'm probably overthinking...) 7y
saresmoore @SharonGoforth I have read most of another translation of AK, although I don't remember the name of the translator. It wasn't good compared to P&V. It's such a long book, I think reading it in the widely recognized best translation is probably ambitious enough! But if you really want to compare, you could probably get a Kindle version for free from a different translator. 7y
SharonGoforth @saresmoore True, thanks! (edited) 7y
Hobbinol I haven't started my copy of this book, but I was bewitched by the publication just the same. 7y

Shopping for others and found this. I love Pushkin's work -- and he has a cameo in the novel I'm writing! (Also? I love Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of "Anna Karenina.")

RanaElizabeth P&V are the heroes of Russian translation. 7y
BookishMarginalia I love P&V! 7y
MrBook Niiice! Added! 7y
saresmoore Agreed re: P&V. I just ordered their translation of Demons by Dostoevsky. Thanks for recommending this, as well! 7y
