I very much enjoy #LeVarBurtonReads podcast. He reads me some interesting and thought provoking stories.

I've never been to NYC, maybe one day, so I don't really know most of these references, but I can imagine the feel to folks that live there. Neat little story that took me maybe 30 mins to listen to? I mean, that's not long - you should read it!

So excited that this short story was a "proof of concept" story for Jemisin's new Great Cities trilogy! (Only the first of the trilogy is out yet, I'll tag it below ⬇️.) This was a reread, and I still just adore how Jemisin paints the spirit and personality of the city (NYC). I'm on hold for the first of the trilogy! ?

A few weeks ago I saw this available on Libby. I saw that it's a standalone short story and 0.5 in The City We Became series. I have the novel and intended to read it this month. I requested this story, keen to wait for the prequel before starting the novel.

Imagine my surprise when the loan finally comes in and the opening sounded familiar. Why? Because I read a page of the prologue and that's all this is! I waited for nothing. 🤦‍♀️

As much as I love Jemisin‘s writing and world building, I can‘t help but feel like this story would‘ve been that much better if she‘d expanded it into either a novella or a full length novel. Love the concept and what she‘s playing with, but it felt so rushed. #AuthorAMonth

So I wanted to give the #authoramonth another chance with this short story prequel. It definitely required a lot of out of the box thinking from me and while I found it wildly imaginative, I just couldn‘t get into the story. Part of it is this author‘s writing style but it‘s also that, as with my other read from N.K. Jemisin, I just can‘t wrap my brain around the story. I have another novella/short story so giving it one last chance. @Soubhiville

What a unique short story, I‘ve always been amazed at the very diverse worlds Jemisin can create, and in this one she takes a world we know (and think we know well) and transforms it into something uniquely original in just a few short pages. It‘s hard to say more without giving away the plot, but I loved the creativity!

I pretty much failed at posting here in 2019, but I didn‘t fail at reading.

Stay tuned - one of my goals for the year is to review more books, so I‘m going to try and recap my end of 2019 reads.

We moved house this week, so I've gotten very little reading done of late. But I did manage to snag this from the comic store 😍 I didn't even know it was a thing!

In true Jemisin form, you are dropped into a fascinating new world and have to pick up the rhythms as you go along. I can't wait for the rest of the story to unfold.

This was a great little short story from N.K. Jemisin. Love these little shorts to fill in my reading time.

Cities are alive—or can be. The cities that make it get avatars to protect them from an ancient evil. This is a story about New York becoming alive.

My partner took my in-laws for a walk, so diving into this novella while I have some peace and quiet.

This was such a wacky, fun short read. I loved the cities as entities concept. #queerbooks

Lovely, quick read!

Tight, fluid narration with a sharp voice. So weird haha Makes me want to go to NYC even more. Loved it! Jemisin is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

Great cities have souls. If you‘re alive to that kind of thing, you can feel it as you move from city to city. And in time, Jemisin tells us, they begin to breathe, and think, and find their way into the world as living creatures.
