If Our Bodies Could Talk
If Our Bodies Could Talk: Conversational Anatomy | James Hamblin
8 posts | 6 read | 12 to read
"If you want to understand the strange workings of the human body, and the future of medicine, you must read this illuminating, engaging book." --Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Gene In 2014, James Hamblin launched a series of videos for The Atlantic called "If Our Bodies Could Talk." With it, the doctor-turned-journalist established himself as a seriously entertaining authority in the field of health. Now, in illuminating and genuinely funny prose, Hamblin explores the human stories behind health questions that never seem to go away--and which tend to be mischaracterized and oversimplified by marketing and news media. He covers topics such as sleep, aging, diet, and much more: * Can I "boost" my immune system? * Does caffeine make me live longer? * Do we still not know if cell phones cause cancer? * How much sleep do I actually need? * Is there any harm in taking a multivitamin? * Is life long enough? In considering these questions, Hamblin draws from his own medical training as well from hundreds of interviews with distinguished scientists and medical practitioners. He translates the (traditionally boring) textbook of human anatomy and physiology into accessible, engaging, socially contextualized, up-to-the-moment answers. They offer clarity, examine the limits of our certainty, and ultimately help readers worry less about things that don't really matter. If Our Bodies Could Talk is a comprehensive, illustrated guide that entertains and educates in equal doses.

I have #romantsy book club at the library tonight (we‘re discussing The Kiss Quotient 😍) - but since I‘m here early I figured I‘d catch up on a book I started last month and hope to finish soon. Really enjoying the lovely 6th floor patio the library has, even better that it‘s relatively empty this evening!
I‘m also really enjoying the informative yet snarky vibe this book has. 😆

I read this on the bus this morning and it‘s been sitting in the back of my mind since - mainly because I have honestly never given any thought to my chin and it‘s possible attractiveness (same goes for thinking of anyone else‘s chin)... clearly tho this a thing people worry about.
The author goes on to say yes, you can make your chin more attractive but heavily infers that it‘s not worth the money or possible side effects.

CoverToCoverGirl 😳 Who knew, not I! 🤣 (edited) 5y
llwheeler I remember an awful lot of discussion about chins in undergrad anthropology class that could basically be summed up with "?‍♀️ chins are weird" lol 5y
CuriousG I have given my chin a surprising amount of thought, but only because my jaw is so small that my dentist has a very hard time working on my molars ? I've heard of people who get chin implants though because they have such a "weak chin." Can't say it's on my list of things to spend money on though 5y

julesG Chin is a sign of attractiveness in a lot of romance novel. If the guy has a strong chin, he's certainly good in the hay - or something like that. 5y
Itchyfeetreader Does the book cover off what of you have more than one?! 😂😂I am the proud owner of a double heading towards triple chin and resigned to round facedness! 5y
xicanti My cousin was born with an undeveloped chin and had to have chin-enhancing surgery when she was a teenager because it caused problems with her jaw. It was intense. 5y

Pickpick

Many folks take better care of their cell phones, cars and computers than their own bodies. Perhaps it is because they have never read an owner's manual? Well, this is a good place to start! It is filled with intriguing questions which are answered with the knowledge of experts, anecdotal illustrations, and observations filled with wit and humor. Common old wives tales and internet-fueled myths about human health are dispelled. Worthwhile read!

Took the picture on my unused treadmill. I have a feeling I know what my body would say if I actually got on it.

Megabooks Same thing mine would! 🤣🤣 7y

Book reading with James Hamblin at Harvard Book Store! I love his videos for the Atlantic.

alisahar My husband said, "I'll bet a third of the people were just there because he's cute." ?? 7y
