Christmas in the Big Woods
Christmas in the Big Woods | Laura Ingalls Wilder
9 posts | 14 read | 2 to read
Long ago, a little girl named Laura Ingalls lived in a little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters, Mary and Carrie, and their good old bulldog, Jack. Winter was just around the corner, and Laura worked hard to help make the little house ready for the cold days ahead. Soon there was frost on the windows and snow on the ground, but Laura and her folks were warm and cozy in their snug little house in the Big Woods. Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers. Now for the first time, the youngest readers can share her adventures in these very special picture books adapted from Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved storybooks. Rene Graef's warm paintings, inspired by Garth Williams' classic Little House illustrations, bring Laura and her family lovingly to life.

I was at my parents' last night and this book was sitting on the counter so I read it! Pretty adorable adaptation of the Christmas chapter from Little House in the Big Woods. The illustrations are cozy and adorable.

Mehso-so

This historical fiction book is not a good book to represent the genre because I think it is too vague and needs to do a better job getting the point of Christmas across to the readers.

This book I would not really like to keep in my classroom just because I think another book would do a better job at getting the point across.

I do love a story about Christmas in the nineteenth century / early twentieth, when everything was hand made and the world was quiet with snow, like Little House on the Prairie or the Children of Noisy Village by Astrid Lindgren. A world away from my own late 20th century summer New Zealand Christmases. And there were always stockings with a piece of fruit or a candy cane to stuff them ❄️

Ruthiella My mom used to always put an orange and walnuts in our stockings. I grew up in Southern California and it was books about kids in the Midwest or east coast of the US in earlier times which helped me understand just how rare it would have been to eat an orange 🍊 for many in the past! 5y
GypsyKat I loved this book as a kid! ❤️ 5y
Centique @Ruthiella oh that‘s lovely! I always got a bag of crisps - not quite as romantic 😂😂 5y

vkois88 This book was my FAVORITE when I was little... the shiny penny!!! 😍😍😍 5y
batsy Lovely pick! These books were so far from my childhood that I was obsessed with it ❤️ @Ruthiella Yes, I recall oranges come up a few times in Laura's life as an unimaginable luxury! I remember she goes to a birthday party at a well-to-do home and the table setting includes an orange with its peel curled to look like a flower. (And I can't believe I still recall the details about food from those books 😂) 5y
Centique @vkois88 yes! The details from your childhood favourites stick don‘t they? @batsy I have completely idealistic visions of a winter Christmas in a log cabin in the woods. I‘d love to experience it but the real thing might be disappointing! 😂😂 5y
batsy Hahaha, I know right? At some point when the reality of no running water hits... And having to sleep in thermal underwear plus outerwear because all of the firewood is damp ... That's when I start whining loudly 😂😂 5y
