The Lamentations of Zeno
The Lamentations of Zeno: A Novel | Ilija Trojanow
9 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
A literary fiction about climate disaster and a scientist imploding on a journey to the Antarctic Zeno Hintermeier is a scientist working as a travel guide on an Antarctic cruise ship, encouraging the wealthy to marvel at the least explored continent and to open their eyes to its rapid degradation. It is a troubling turn in the life of an idealistic glaciologist. Now in his early sixties, Zeno bewails the loss of his beloved glaciers, the disintegration of his marriage, and the foundering of his increasingly irrelevant career. Troubled in conscience and goaded by the smug complacency of the passengers in his charge, he starts to plan a desperate gesture that will send a wake-up call to an overheating world. The Lamentations of Zeno is an extraordinary evocation of the fragile and majestic wonders to be found at a far corner of the globe, written by a novelist who is a renowned travel writer. Poignant and playful, the novel recalls the experimentation of high-modernist fiction without compromising a limpid sense of place or the pace of its narrative. It is a portrait of a man in extremis, a haunting and at times irreverent tale that approaches the greatest challenge of our ageperhaps of our entire history as a speciesfrom an impassioned human angle.

The only reason I finished was it was small and I was using for #cli-fi
I don‘t know whether it‘s the translation or just a terrible book. There were about 10 pages of important stuff about climate change and impact on the environment and humans etc (including a bit with penguins). But otherwise......nope.

jb72 It‘s terrible when you just don‘t want to hear certain words. Currently the audiobook I‘m listening to keeps using the words panties over and over again. 6y
TrishB @jb72 it was the horrible cringeworthy use of it too! Panties doesn‘t have a good vibe either! 6y

After finishing the Sophie School Biography yesterday (review will follow), I started Ilija Trojanows novel. It's supposedly a quick read.

Mehso-so

This was an interesting book, Zeno is a scientist who works on an Antarctic Cruise ship, he becomes increasingly distressed for the fate of the glaciers because of mans treatment of the earth... from here the narrative unfolds in a way I have never experienced before. This is translated from the German though the author is not a native speaker. It's interbank complex for a relatively short book #LRC15 #litsyreadingchallenge #readingaroundtheworld

minkyb Great review when limited to 451 characters! 8y
