Take Courage
Take Courage: Anne Bronte and the Art of Life | Samantha Ellis
9 posts | 2 read | 38 to read
'I was wowed and moved' Tracy Chevalier Anne Bront is the forgotten Bront sister, overshadowed by her older siblings -- virtuous, successful Charlotte, free-spirited Emily and dissolute Branwell. Tragic, virginal, sweet, stoic, selfless, Anne. The less talented Bront, the other Bront. Or that's what Samantha Ellis, a life-long Emily and Wuthering Heights devotee, had always thought. Until, that is, she started questioning that devotion and, in looking more closely at Emily and Charlotte, found herself confronted by Anne instead. Take Courage is Samantha's personal, poignant and surprising journey into the life and work of a woman sidelined by history. A brave, strongly feminist writer well ahead of her time -- and her more celebrated siblings -- and who has much to teach us today about how to find our way in the world. Praise for How To Be A Heroine 'Any woman with a remotely bookish childhood will find great pleasure in How to be a Heroine' Sunday Times 'Genius.... A fantastically inspirational memoir that makes you want to reread far too many books' Observer 'Not so much self-help as shelf-help... A truly brilliant read' Marie Claire 'Delightfully honest and warmly funny' Daily Mail 'The best kind of book: one that I gobbled up, wanting to go slow to savour it but unable to stop reading until it was all gone' Observer

I took courage today and went for a dip in frigid Lake Superior. Now I'm wrapped in a blanket in front of this fire with a fantastic book. Vacation is such a lovely thing! #brontesisters #puremichigan

Nebklvr That doesn‘t sound like fun 6y
Andrea313 @Nebklvr Lake Superior, you mean? Maybe "fun" isn't quite the word, but it was certainly invigorating! 6y
LondElle89 Ohhh I'm going to have to get my hands on this. I need more info on Anne Brontë!!! 5y
Andrea313 @LondElle89 I highly recommend this one! Samantha Ellis is a brilliant writer and made me fall in love with Anne. 5y

This tagged book arrived at my house yesterday. After reading about it on @LeahBergen Posts, of course I just had to order it! Unbeknownst to me, this book is by the same author as a #TBR book I chose for my August #MakeMeReadIt stack.

BeansPage Nice! 6y
LeahBergen Yay! 👏🏻👏🏻 I have the other one waiting on my shelf, too. 😄 6y
Andrea313 I really loved How To Be a Heroine and am so excited to read Take Courage! Looking forward to getting your thoughts. :) 6y

The author of this book always preferred Emily and Charlotte to the pious and boring Anne Bronte ... until she held Anne‘s last letter in her hands at the Bronte Parsonage Museum. She realized that Anne had been the victim of a bit of Victorian whitewashing and sets out to discover the “real” Anne.

Rather than a straightforward biography, the author takes a delightfully chatty tone with the reader (and I can hardly put it down!).

LauraJ Love this style of bio 🖤 6y

Does anyone know who I need to tag for this photo challenge?

Today's prompt was Book Stack so I thought I'd share part of my TBR bookcases. About 3/4 of the shelves in this are TBR. 😬.

Amongst these is Take Courage, a book about Anne Bronte. I need a bit of courage to tackle Mount TBR!

Eggs Lovely 😊 7y

Today's book mail.

Why am I reading 5 books right now? The first few pages of this make me want to jump right in and learn more about the "forgotten Bronte sister". ❤️

LauraBrook I finally just watched To Walk Invisible, and I'm newly reobsessed w the Brontës! ? 7y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook Wasn't it well done? I was impressed. 7y
Suet624 I'm reading three books and I just don't think it's the best way for me to enjoy a book. It's like trying to listen to three movies, alternating between them, and interrupting the rise to the crescendo. It breaks up the rhythm that the writer has laid down. Okay, enough of my rant. 😀 7y

LauraBrook @LeahBergen It really was! I wish they'd done something more with charlottes affair, but it was so much better than I expected. I just ordered The Brontes of Haworth bc Amazon was low on copies, so I hope that's good too. But I'll be getting a copy of Invisible too! Have you seen BoH? 7y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I'm reading three at the same time and I never do that!!! I like to focus on one at a time! 2 are hardcover and one is on my kindle. 7y
LeahBergen @Suet624 I am SO with you. I usually only ever read one book at once and this is driving me crazy. I'm going to knock a few small ones off quickly and try not to do it again. 7y
rubyslippersreads I need to move this up my TBR list. And since I'm a multiple-books-at-the-same-time #bookfloozy, also Anne's novels, my new Bronte letters #Folio book, and possibly (edited) 7y
LeahBergen @LauraBrook I initially thought I wouldn't like the actors they used but they grew on me very quickly. I haven't seen The BoH - is that a doc? 7y
LeahBergen @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I know! I can't stand it. I'll be quickly whittling this stack down. 😬 7y
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads You #bookfloozy , you! 😂 I am SO trying to not go and hunt down that Folio book (but you know I will). I may need to reread The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, I think. 7y
RohitSawant So awesome! I‘ve been meaning to read this since it came out. Can‘t wait to hear your thoughts! 7y
Suet624 Just a little change in my previous comment: it was supposed to read "it's like trying to listen to three songs" (not movies) ? 7y
LeahBergen @Suet624 Which makes more sense but I (of course) didn't catch that error and your comment made total sense to me! 😂 7y
LeahBergen @rohit-sawant I think it was you that first brought this book to my attention! 7y
LauraBrook @LeahBergen You know, I have no idea if BoH is a doc or not! I just bought it bc I've heard good things (and I'm weak). Will let you know once I watch it! 7y
batsy @Suet624 @LeahBergen I feel the same. I'm doing three books for buddy reads and I haven't even started on the third (Tove Jansson). I took a break from Litsy for a few days that stretched to get a week to get a grip on life and reading but I have no grip on anything, least of all Litsy, because now I'm feeling the panic of missing out on posts and discussions about buddy reads 😂 7y
LeahBergen @batsy I know what you mean!! I hate to miss anything on Litsy but I'm away on holiday next week and I KNOW I'm just going to have to let it go, Litsy-anxiety be damned! 😂 7y
Suet624 @batsy I know exactly how you feel. Be careful not to burn out on Litsy. Or on reading. I love seeing what others are doing and what they're reading, but I have to set a time limit for myself. Otherwise I'll become obsessive about it. 7y
batsy @LeahBergen Oh no, you can't leave us, if only for a week! 😂 j/k Holiday sounds wonderful and I hope you a great one free of Litsy-anxiety! I'm so glad you guys relate. Yes @Suet624 I have to be careful about getting obsessive as well, the time limit is something I've recently set for myself too 👍 7y

@thereadingwomen

Instead of highlighting classic books I thought I'd show two recent biographies about the Bronte sisters. Both of these are still in #MountTBR.

I have an interest in the Bronte sisters, not only for the literature they created but for the lives they lived. I also live close to their father's ancestral home in #NorthernIreland , and enjoy exploring this local connection.

LeahBergen I am ordering Take Courage very soon!! I've been on one of my cyclical Bronte kicks lately. 8y
tpixie @LeahBergen 💕💕 I saw this post and thought of you! I'm glad you saw it too! (edited) 8y
LeahBergen @tpixie Thank you! Is it because of all the Bronte spamming I've been doing of late?? 😂 8y
tpixie @LeahBergen lol yes! But I like it!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🎉🎉🎉💕💕 8y

Today on the Brit Lit blog: Brontë books and latest book charts. https://britlitblog.com/2017/01/06/today-in-brit-lit-news-6th-jan-2017/

Suzze Very interesting about the author of Nina is Not Okay withdrawing herself from consideration for book of the year by a writer of colour. This, I'm sure, is causing a lot of discussion. 8y
