Inside the Kingdom
Inside the Kingdom: My Life in Saudi Arabia | Carmen Bin Ladin
5 posts | 9 read | 20 to read
Osama bin Laden's former sister-in-law provides a penetrating, unusually inti- mate look into Saudi soci-ety and the bin Laden family's role within it, as well as the treatment of Saudi women. On September 11th, 2001, Carmen bin Ladin heard the news that the Twin Towers had been struck. She instinctively knew that her ex-brother-in-law was involved in these hor-rifying acts of terrorism, and her heart went out to America. She also knew that her life and the lives of her family would never be the same again. Carmen bin Ladin, half Swiss and half Persian, married into-and later divorced from-the bin Laden family and found herself inside a complex and vast clan, part of a society that she neither knew nor understood. Her story takes us inside the bin Laden family and one of the most powerful, secretive, and repressed kingdoms in the world.

#MarchintoReading Here are a few #recentnonfictionreads that I really enjoyed~ found fascinating! I read Hotel on Place Vendome (excellent) and the others were audiobooks 🗣By far, the BEST of the bunch was Born a Crime!!!

Lacythebookworm YES, Born a Crime! 🙌 8y
Reviewsbylola I need to read Born a Crime. 8y
Cinfhen I don't usually advocate for #audiobooks, but Born A Crime on audio was phenomenal @Reviewsbylola If you can, try it that way ~ soooo good, @Lacythebookworm agrees 😊 8y
melbeautyandbooks I agree- Born a Crime on audio was amazing! 8y

Pickpick

Just finished some #audiocoloring and listening to the fascinating inside scoop on both the Bin Ladin & the Saudi Royal Family. I'm conflicted over the author - she writes a compelling story & I believe her strong love for her daughters was always her driving force however she lived a VERY lavish lifestyle & her whiny attitude was at times unbearable & pretentious #LetterI #LitsyAtoZ #popsugar - different ethnicity #nonfictionchallenge17

britt_brooke Great review! 8y
Cinfhen Awww, thanks @britt_brooke 😘 8y

So, according to Carmen Bin Ladin the "famous" photo of Osama wearing a green sweater while on a family vacation, which I posted yesterday (thank you Google) is actually NOT Osama Bin Ladin ~ oops ? That is another brother! Sorry, people! This is why you listen & read...to learn more everyday ?Her story is incredibly fascinating & completely engrossing. It's hard to believe how women are expected to live in the shadows, with absolutely no rights

Cortg I read this several years ago and it was one of my all time favorites! Seriously, so so good! 8y
Cinfhen @Cortg it's eye~opening and makes me appreciate how much I take for granted every day! I'm enjoying the audio version a lot, I think it lends itself to the story 8y
ValerieAndBooks Even if he wasn't actually in that pic it really does show just how big that family was. I "can't even" either! 8y

Carmen Bin Ladin's ex-husband (brother to Osama Bin Ladin) had 29 sisters & 25 brothers! His father had 22 wives! Can you imagine that Thanksgiving dinner??? It is shocking to discover, what life was like inside Saudi Arabia in the 1970's! Photo is courtesy of google. (The guy in the circle is Bin Laden at age 14, in 1971. He is on vacation with only 22 of his brother and sister in Sweden.)

Josie I didn't know where you were going with that, but LOL'd at Thanksgiving lol 8y
Cinfhen @Josie my husband can't deal with one wife, 3 kids...can you imagine 22 wives and 55 kids!!! It's INSANE!!! 8y
beagle.mama I can't help but notice that one kid looks like Prince. 💜 8y
Cinfhen @beagle.mama 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I'm dying!!! Who knows?!? With 22 wives, it's possible! RIP Prince 👑 8y
