Washington's Farewell
Washington's Farewell: The Founding Father's Warning to Future Generations | John Avlon
24 posts | 5 read | 40 to read
A vivid portraitA thoughtful consideration of Washingtons wisdom that couldnt be timelier. Kirkus Reviews (starred review) George Washingtons Farewell Address was a prophetic letter from a parting friend to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared could destroy our democracy: hyper-partisanship, excessive debt, and foreign wars. Once celebrated as civic scripture, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence, the Farewell Address is now almost forgotten. Its message remains starkly relevant. In Washingtons Farewell, John Avlon offers a stunning portrait of our first president and his battle to save America from self-destruction. At the end of his second term, Washington surprised Americans by publishing his Farewell message in a newspaper. The President called for unity among citizens by birth or choice, advocated moderation, defended religious pluralism, proposed a foreign policy of independence (not isolation), and proposed that education is essential to democracy. He established the precedent for the peaceful transfer of power. Washingtons urgent message was adopted by Jefferson after years of opposition and quoted by Lincoln in defense of the Union. Woodrow Wilson invoked it for nation-building; Eisenhower for Cold War; Reagan for religion. Now the Farewell Address may inspire a new generation to re-center our politics and reunite our nation through the lessons rooted in Washingtons experience. As John Avlon describes the perilous state of the new nation that Washington was preparing to leave as its leader, with enduring wisdom, he reveals him to be the indispensable Founding Father.

This book was interesting and easy to follow. I really enjoyed the narrative and in the process learned about a fallible man not an untouchable legend.

"The Terror had begun" It's National Book Week. The rules are, grab the closest book to you (don't go searching for your favorite or the most profound or intellectual - grab the closest book!), turn to page 56, post the 5th sentence as your status. Don't mention the title. Copy the rules as part of your status.

Hahahahahaha. I was just thinking that before I got to that second sentence. Boy those Victorians really had a handle on over the top imagery.

When you excitedly run into your 15 yr olds room and announce you found a really cool word and he says with excitement "Oh yeah what's the definition!" You know that apple didn't fall far from the tree. ♡●♡●♡

Bravo Mr. Washington and I thank you for your service to our country!

DogMomIrene Ahhh! Back in the day when we had true statesmen. 7y
Gina @ocdIrene so true. What I love about this book is the personal details like the names he called his beloved dogs, how he was in physical pain all the time, even what his teeth were made of. His conflict on if he was doing the right thing. It makes him more a a flesh and blood person instead of a name with accolades behind it 7y

Starting my eveing off with a read about our founding father and a cannoli.

As historian Daniel Boorstin wrote: "The heirs of Jefferson and Madison would be the Democratic - Republicans, the heirs of Hamilton and Adams would be the Federalist. But the heirs of Washington would be all Americans."

I strongly recommend this look at GW's farewell address in its context and as it has been used throughout American history. It's surprisingly relevant! The book is easy to read, and the audiobook, narrated by the author himself, is a winner! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #Recommendsday

Cinfhen At first I thought I read it was read by George Washington himself and I was like what??!? 😂hope you and @WanderingBookaneer are having a lovely day off 💕 7y

megnews @BookishMarginalia Did you recently post that you are reading a biography of every president? 7y

BookishMarginalia @megnews Not me. I did read that, but can't remember which Litten is embarking on that project. 7y
megnews I started biographies of the presidents with my kids some time ago. Got up to Lincoln. I thought about doing that challenge myself with adult biographies but wanted to find the best. Hopefully I come across it again to see their recommendations. 7y
Suet624 John Avlon was just on Bill Maher's show. Did you see it? He had interesting things to say about our current situation. 7y
BookishMarginalia @Suet624 Thanks for pointing it out to me! Avlon is just as thoughtful and articulate as a speaker as he is a writer👍🏼 7y

I'm learning so much about George Washington, his presidency, the Constitution of the US, and its first tempestuous years as a republic. The primary source for this quote is: https://www.loc.gov/exhibits/treasures/trm006.html

KennethTolesJr I actually recently found out that Washington was opposed to slavery, even though the times (and his wife) pressured him into having one. I definitely found a new stack of respect for him when I found that out. 7y

Listening to and reading this thought-provoking book, which details how Washington fought for moderation and warned against the danger of factions pulling the republic apart. Wise words, Mr President.

(See #Septimus's ear there? He's purring on my lap 💜💜💜)

Bette Oh hope more are listening. 7y
ptkpepe98 As did James Madison.... 7y
Laalaleighh My favorite part of Hamilton is when they read a good portion of washingtons farewell out loud with music in the background. It's just so amazingly done and I don't know anyone but Lin-man that could have successfully incorporated it into a musical like that. 7y

On facing criticism while being president (and Washington faced much criticism in the press, including some penned anonymously by high-ranking members of his own staff.)

#TBRtemptation post! President Washington's Farewell Address was considered so important that it was more published, copied, and referenced than almost any other document for--some moments even more the Declaration if Independence! It's been referenced by future presidents from Thomas Jefferson to Barack Obama. It's a crucial statement to know and understand, by a Daily Beast & CNN contributor. President's Day is soon! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
