The Playbook
The Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life | Kwame Alexander
23 posts | 13 read | 9 to read
A companion book to his bestselling and Newbery winning book The Crossover, The Playbook is Kwame Alexander's dynamic, sports-infused guide to life! You gotta know the rules to play the game. Ball is life. Take it to the hoop. Soar. What can we imagine for ourselves? What if we were the star players, moving and grooving through the game of life? What if we had our own rules of the game to help us get what we want, what we aspire to, what will enrich our lives? Illustrated with photographs by Thai Neave, The Playbook is intended to provide inspiration for kids ages ten and up to help them succeed on and off the court. Each rule contains wisdom from inspiring athletes and role models such as Nelson Mandela, Serena Williams, LeBron James, Carli Lloyd, Steph Curry and Michelle Obama. Kwame Alexander also provides his own words of inspiration and uplift, as he shares his stories of overcoming obstacles and winning games.

Kwame Alexander begins this book with his own athletic journey from basketball, football, tennis, where he finally found the sport that made him a high school champion. After this introduction, the book is divided into four quarters, like a game, entitled, grit, Motivation, Focus, and Teamwork. i would rate this book a 10/10 because i love sports and the book is all that and more.

Portergook i would recommend this book to anyone who likes a short read and who likes sports. 5y
MissYaremcio Great review Porter! Is this a biography or an autobiography? 5y

My students will love this one. I loved this one. So many great sport analogies that teach us about goal setting, winning, losing, and perseverance.

I have been recovering from a surgery and I'm in many ways incapacitated, but I can read and I have been.

mydearwatson We have mixed feelings about Kevin Durant here in Oklahoma 😆... 6y
DebbieGrillo @mydearwatson TBH I don't know who Kevin Durant is. Decent quote though. 6y
mydearwatson He played for our professional basketball team. He did a lot of good for our state but up and left for the Golden State Warriors. 6y
CMB My husband and I coached b-ball and Mr. D. Is correct. I understand that some are dismayed with him for his defection, yet, this quote sure rings true. As Larry Bird fans, we‘re Old School so we don‘t have a lot of faith in the pros of today...😔 6y

Picked up this book for my daughter. (The background is a picture of the endpapers, which are textured to feel like a basketball!) She‘s almost 12 and really into non-fiction, especially memoirs/autobiographies. Her favorites are Being Jazz, Malala, and the U.S. gymnasts‘ books. I‘m trying to get some no-pressure, enjoyable summer reading in her eye holes. Any middle grade/YA non-fiction suggestions?

TheFunkyBookworm Oh just reread and saw you requested non fiction 😬 we haven‘t gotten to that yet lol oops! 7y
TheWordJar @TheFunkyBookworm ❤️❤️❤️This is great! Both weeks were actually really helpful! We homeschool, and during our school year I like to pick one book each month for us to read together, and I love all the diverse suggestions. And she also really wants to read Stephen King (😳), so maybe something on the mystery/thriller list will interest her instead! Any plans for non-fiction week? 7y

TheFunkyBookworm @TheWordJar oh good I‘m glad it was still helpful! Let‘s do nonfiction next week! I‘ll tag you when I post it 😀 7y
TheWordJar @TheFunkyBookworm Awesome!! 🙌 7y
Peddler410 Another is coming — Two Truths and a Lie: History. The one I tagged shares three stories from the media on a related topic. The reader has to decide which is the lie. Also gives research tips. 6y
TheWordJar @Peddler410 Those sound great! Thanks for the heads-up! 6y

This year's birthday book for my "little one" (who is 15 and about a head taller than me ?). Since they were born we have given my boys a book for their birthday with a note written inside. I'm hoping they become treasures for them one day.

AlaMich That's such a wonderful tradition!! 📚📚📚 7y

If you read The Crossover, you're going to want this book. It has life lessons taken from sports, with inspirational stories and quotes throughout.

I was excited to score this #arc today! I got to see Kwame Alexander speak as well (I'll post that picture separately). It's nonfiction with tips or young people for succeeding in life. It uses basketball metaphors, plus stories from inspirational figures.
