The Red Zone: An Earthquake Story | Silvia Vecchini, Sualzo
post image
Pickpick

This is a MG graphic novel in translation. The author wrote it after devastating earthquakes struck Italy in 2016.It shows how a community comes together , and the many ways life gets turned on its head after natural disaster. I enjoyed the story of the three main friends, how they cope, and the illustrations. #MG #graphicnovel #translation

As a mom of a special needs child, I was apprehensive about how the character of Natalie (who has autism) would be handled. After uncomfortable teasing in the 1st chapter, the rest of the novel shows Natalie as complex with emotions and understanding beyond what she is initially given credit for. The setting is Alcatraz but the story is about the relationship between a typical brother and his autistic sister in the 1930s. #mg #coverchange ⬇️

Blaire #bbrc. The author‘s sister has autism and I think this helps make it a less stereotypical portrait. Natalie is called retarded by another child at the start of the book and I found this upsetting. If reading with kids a lot of context about the historical period and how people who were not neurotypical were viewed at the time. 1w
LibrarianRyan I'm glad you liked it. I love this series. I haven't read all of them, but most of them. 1w

Loved this book as a kid and loved sharing this quiet read with my son. We‘ve been reading a lot of Lemony Snicket and this was a nice change of pace. Caleb and Anna‘s mother has died and their dad writes a letter seeking a possible bride. Sarah arrives from Maine very much her own person and does not change to fit in, but finds her own way to belong. Strong female character. #bbrc #mg #fewerthan150pages

Sace I read that for a college class for my elementary Ed degree. I should give it a reread. 2w

Tamra I love the Hallmark movie series with Glen Close. Time for a rewatch! 💜 2w

Saving Fable | Scott Reintgen

Mr. Reintgen has stolen my heart, his young reader's hearts & replaced it with the genuine courage of a little girl named Indira Story. She is definitely endearing! I found myself in awe of his talent & the way his mind works. I gasped audibly in so many places just on the genius of his writing style. Seriously, this is pure thrilling entertainment revolving around the writing process you seem to forget you aren‘t one of the side characters. #MG

A charming #MG fantasy novel about a baby who gets sacrificed to the “evil” witch but instead gets accidentally magicked. Cover is gorgeous and the writing is pretty. It‘s not perfect but very cute.

Beautiful illustrations with an interesting albeit predictable story. Lots of potential here for some compelling character growth and cool world-building. I will definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

I never read this book in school so I was happy to finally read it for #BBRC. What a great little book and quite heavy considering the intended audience, but thought-provoking nonetheless.

Finally read this and I found it to be entertaining. I watched the movie so I kept going back to that. I thought the changes made in the movie made sense for that medium, but I did enjoy seeing more characters in the book.

Roller Girl | Victoria Jamieson

I loved this! This was recommended to me by my friend‘s daughter and I must say she has great taste. A coming of age story about friendships and not giving up on your dreams, any kid (or adult) could relate to what Astrid is going through. The plot was easy to follow, the illustrations were fun and a great introduction to roller derby. Highly recommend!
