The Edwardians
The Edwardians | Vita Sackville-West
WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY KATE WILLIAMS Sebastian is young, handsome and romantic, the heir to a vast and beautiful English country estate. He is a fixed feature in the eternal round of lavish parties, intrigues and traditions at the cold, decadent heart of Edwardian high society. Everyone knows the role he must play, but Sebastian isn't sure he wants the part. Position, privilege and wealth are his, if he can resist the lure of a brave new world.

A solid 3 stars. There are passages that are superb but there are also parts where I lost interest. It‘s an interesting comparison to Swann‘s Way and other books I‘ve been reading from this period - here we have a woman‘s observations of high society (although through a young male protagonist) I feel that Vita has more insight into the ageing beauty, the society doyen, the virtuous but naive wife etc. ⬇️

Centique Really fascinating if you‘ve read about Vita‘s life - here were characters having some of the same passions and qualms that I supposed Vita had - boredom and short intense affairs, her love for the estate she could never own, her doubts about social hierarchy and conventional morality. Well worth a read if this period interests you. 4y
Tanisha_A Never read Vita. Only a couple of correspondences between her and Woolf. I am stacking this. Also, that lamp is beautiful. 😍 4y
Centique @Tanisha_A I wish it was my lamp but unfortunately no! Just took a photo of it in an antique shop. I read this biography of Vita last year and it was so fascinating - I‘m a little obsessed with her and Woolf now 4y

Centique @BarbaraTheBibliophage ha! 🤣 I went to your feed and couldn‘t see anything in the last few days - I should have realised you would have been in the early rounds of this! 5y

erzascarletbookgasm How is this book? You‘ve read it? 5y
Centique @erzascarletbookgasm not yet! Lets ask @batsy 😊👍 5y
Tanisha_A All the shades of blue. 💙 5y
batsy @Centique @erzascarletbookgasm The Litsy rating doesn't do it justice! A lovely slow-burn read about the excess and hypocrisies of the aristocrats. I found it very readable and compelling :) 5y
Centique @batsy this is on my list for next year - it sounds gorgeous. I read a bio of Vita last year and I‘m entranced already 💕 5y
erzascarletbookgasm @batsy @Centique great to know! Stacking. I have her other book tbr 5y

It‘s been a rather rainy June in England, but a least I was able to enjoy my books.

Sebastian, a young and handsome duke, heir to the beautiful Chevron Estate, is bored. He feels his life is mapped out for him and he is being swept along in a tide of tradition; the more he tries to rebel, the more he unwittingly conforms. Set in 1905, at the end of the Edwardian era, the reader already knows the cataclysmic changes that England will face, how long can the privileged last and can it adapt or will it be lost forever.

Thanks for the tag, @CrowCAH 😊

1. Classic: Jane Austen the Brontes 🌸 Modern: Sue Grafton, Maeve Binchy (not really all that modern 😀)
2. Lunch/coffee with friends during the day; evenings with a book and my cats.
3. A lot of my favorite books/movies/interests seem to take place in the early 1900s—the Betsy-Tacy books, Titanic, The Music Man, Downton Abbey, etc.
4. Anyone who hasn't already been tagged and wants to play. 😊

Mehso-so

My 50th book so far this year -1/3 of my Goodreads goal 💪💪💪 unfortunately I wasn't mad about this one, it should have been right up my alley but felt lacklustre and just when it would pique my interest it would deviate away from the thing that interested me!

Reviewsbylola That‘s unfortunate but congrats on hitting 50!! This is a beautiful cover. 6y
