Ubo
Ubo | Steve Rasnic Tem
6 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Daniel is trapped in Ubo. He has no idea how long he has been imprisoned there by the roaches. Every resident has a similar memory of the journey: a dream of dry, chitinous wings crossing the moon, the gigantic insects dropping swiftly over the houses; the creatures, like a deck of baroquely ornamented cards, fanning themselves from one hidden world into the next. And now each day they force Daniel to play a different figure from humanity’s violent history, from a frenzied Jack the Ripper to a stumbling and confused Stalin, to a self-proclaimed god executing survivors atop the ruins of the world. As skies burn and prisoners go mad, identities dissolve as the experiments evolve, and no one can foretell their mysterious end.

Daniel has been yanked from his life and taken to Ubo where he‘s forced to inhabit the body of people who were pure evil including Jack the Ripper and Stalin. I could only read it in small doses because I found it so intense. I was all about it until the last 25 pages when it lost me. Still a pick. I‘d love to hear what others think of it. If you read it, please tag me.

I can only read this one in small doses before the intensity is too much. 😮

We used to think this observation was so astute. Now it reads like a self-congratulatory confession

Weaponxgirl Right! It now feels like he put it in as armour against any accusations that came he's way. Got the rhetoric down pat so people will think I'm a good guy. Ugh 6y
Reggie There‘s also this SNL skit that I thought was hilarious at the time because he plays this ice cream man trying to pick up a teenage girl but now it‘s just creepy. 6y

Reggie So when I was 9 and my brother was 3, for a summer we lived in student housing while our mom went back to finish her masters and my dad his bachelors. But the student housing was roach infested. One day they sent the exterminator and all day long roaches crawled out to die. My brother was pretty scared so being the awful big brother that I am I told him that he didn‘t want to let a roach bite him because then he would turn into one and then we 6y
Reggie Would have to kill him. And then I swiped at the back of his neck like I was brushing a roach off his neck and told him OMG it bit you and now your skin is peeling and you‘re turning into a roach. He cried so hard. He left to the next door neighbors for the day. Till this day he has a phobia of insects. #awfulolderbrotherstories @danibolahood @scripturient @ephemeralwaltz @GatheringBooks @BookishTrish That‘s what this pic reminds me of. 6y
