#sundayfunday @ozma.of.oz
I think like many swedes, childhood and Astrid Lindgren are near synonymous. In the US, Pippi Longstocking is probably her most famous creation, but the fantasy works (Ronia the Robber's Daughter, The Brothers Lionheart, Mio My Son) were my favourites, because well, I'm me. But The Children of Noisy Village and Emil the prankster are based in small agricultural villages from the author's own childhood...

annamatopoetry ... And the Magpie series as well as short stories like The Red Bird deals with social inequality. And Lindgren refuses to shy away from sad or difficult, including death. Just overall fantastic. But Pippi isn't my favorite. 2y
BookmarkTavern I had no idea the creator of Pippi was Swedish! That‘s so neat! Thank you so much for sharing! 2y
annamatopoetry @ozma.of.oz thanks for giving me an opportunity to proselytize! lol there are definitely books of hers I'd recommend to adults as well, especially Ronia! 2y

Thanks for the tag @JaclynW ! :)

1. As soon as I could read:) Well, actually before that as my parents read for me. I was a frequent visitor at the library when I was young.
2. Tagged. Such a talented author, I love all her books, but this really made an impact on me the first time I read it as a child. And she has the gift of conveying one message to the young ones, and another to the adults, making it a beautiful read for both.

Thanks for the tag @Deifio šŸ¤©

For me it‘s definitely Astrid Lindgren‘s The Brothers Lionheart. I loved everything she wrote, but this book has a special place in my heart. It taught a far too serious kid not to fear death. A small piece of me still believes in Nangijala...

Wanna play @Tahoe ?

Deifio Oh I loved it too! I even did a speech about it in school! 5y

I had never heard of the book we discuss on this week‘s episode of the pod ā€” The Brothers Lionheart ā€” until my guest (author/illustrator Amy Ignatow) shared how much she‘d loved it growing up. The experience of reading it was... fascinating! dark! emotional! bizarre! oddly beautiful! It left me with so many feelings! We discuss the plot in great detail for those who are also new to this one. Link to listen in bio!

I read this to my daughter when she was 9 and she couldn't understand why I was crying. Now she's older and has read it on her own. At the end she exclaimed "OMG that's so sad!" and started crying. She says there should be a word for something that is both so sad and so sweet. Bittersweet doesn't begin to cover it. But we now have a handy scale to measure emotional upheaval: from "Meh, whatever" ? to "The ending of the Brothers Lionheart" ??

LeahBergen I‘ve been wanting to read this book (but I‘m also scared to read it) šŸ˜†šŸ˜† 6y
Leniverse @LeahBergen It is really good! Like off the scale good! Part of its magic is that children tend to view it as having a happy ending whereas adults become emotionally wrecked. Lindgren herself said that the adult in her knows how it is, but the child in her refuses to accept it. I try to cling to that. The children's interpretation is equally valid! 6y
LeahBergen @Leniverse You‘ve convinced me! šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ» 6y
BarbaraBB I loved this book so much when I was a kid and fortunately my own kids did too! 6y

This was one of my very favorite books when I was a child; I don't even know how many times I checked it out of the library. Looking back I realize this (along with the Narnia series) was my portal to fantasy. ā¤ Anyway, I grew up, and although I remembered the story well, I could not remember the name of either book or author... until I read another book a few weeks ago that mentioned it. After adding it to my wishlist, a friend gave it to me! ā¤

#SeptinBooks18 Day 9: #FavoriteFictionalSiblings

Once upon a time, when I hadn‘t yet read enough to realise you can‘t have just one favourite book, this was my no. 1 favouritešŸ˜Š I don‘t know their names in the English or original version, but in Dutch they were Jonathan and Kruimel (which means crumb). My dad used to call me Kruimel too, so INSTANT kinship. And Kruimel loved to read!! And Jonathan was the big brother I always wantedšŸ˜

QueenAnne Wauw ja! Dat is lang geleden zeg! Brings back memories šŸ˜ 6y
LittleBug @QueenAnne Hey leuk, NederlandsšŸ˜Š yep, voor mij ook, echt nostalgie! 6y

I read this for the first time around the age when You start to understand that people who die don‘t come backšŸ˜” This book was a huge comfort and it had an enormous influence on how I feel about death and dying.

My third grade teacher read this to our class, but summer arrived before she could finish. My book-loving grandma helped me order a copy from her bookstore... it arrived towards the end of the summer... so worth the wait! ā¤ļø #favoriteschoolread #riotgrams

I‘m studying to become a teacher for the first four grades in elementary school, and now we‘re working with litterature! We‘re going to read these two and I‘m so excited, because these authors are my (and almost every swede‘s) whole childhood. Astrid Lindgren is the queen of children‘s books with Pippi Longstocking and Bröderna Lejonhjärta (The Brothers Lionheart) and many more! Tove Jansson is another queen with her books about the Moomins!

More op shops buys. Colouring in book for a friend. I can't get into this colouring thing but she loves it. Every time I see an Astrid Lindgren now I'm getting it. Really want one for my daughter called My Very Own Sister. It seems to be out of print and second hand versions very expensive. It was her favourite book as a child. She borrowed it numerous times from the library. The Enid Blyton is for my collection. @MrsMalaprop
