I‘m so glad to have read this as my summer break is winding down and I prepare to go back to school. It was the perfect timing for these vignettes of a grandmother and granddaughter together on an island in summer. I also thoroughly enjoyed the illustrations.

If you enjoy reading Neil Gaiman or you liked Lincoln in the Bardo, I think you will like this book. Max Porter has a very unique, poetic voice . The settings is small village outside London where the trees and the land tell tales of the past. In the present lives Lanny; a young, unique, artistic boy who has gone missing. This book is as ethereal and mystical as Porter‘s first book, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers.
A great quote for both Jansson's birthday & National Book Lover's Day ! 📚📚
⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wolff was a poor white kid in a black neighborhood whose awkward father desperately desired to fit in. When eventually she tested into to a fancy rich kid school, she didn‘t meld there either. Like many, she uses humor as a coping mechanism; both back then and now. This is a much-needed perspective of growing up in poverty, plus she‘s a funny storyteller. However, the writing is unremarkable, and title/cover are a bit cringy. #bookclub
#ArtfulAugust Day 4: We have a #Boat of sorts in this lakehouse we are renting for the next three days. I found the perfect reading corner close to the boat and the lake. I think I brought the perfect book(s) with me.
I listened to this because it‘s an alternate summer selection for my AP Lang students. Walls‘ life story is compelling, but I didn‘t find much literary merit in the book itself. Each track being an hour+ didn‘t help. I was most interested to learn how she transitioned to her independent, adult life in NYC, but that part felt fast forwarded: “For a few years… after 4 years… 5 years had passed…” Huge time jumps at the end! #teachersoflitsy #librofm

I had high hopes for this book.... but Liza drove me nuts! After awhile her stories about her mom and how she treated her just got to be too much. Almost to the point of whining. Maybe it‘s my mood but this could have been better. Instead it felt like a way for her to complain 🙄. Kind of ruined it for me.
A scorching hot walk in the neighborhood. This horse barn belongs to the old Conway Twitty estate. #audiowalk #bookclub
