Zoom meets Beautiful Oops! in this memorable picture book debut about the creative process, and the way in which "mistakes" can blossom into inspiration One eye was bigger than the other. That was a mistake. The weird cat-cow-frog thing? Well, it made an excellent bush. And the inky smudges . . . they look as though they were always meant to be leaves floating gently across the sky. As one artist incorporates accidental splotches, spots, and misshapen things into her art, she transforms her piece in quirky and unexpected ways, taking readers on a journey through her process. Told in minimal, playful text, this story shows readers that even the biggest "mistakes" can be the source of the brightest ideas--and that, at the end of the day, we are all works in progress, too. Fans of Peter Reynolds's Ish and Patrick McDonnell's A Perfectly Messed-Up Story will love the funny, poignant, completely unique storytelling of The Book of Mistakes. And, like Oh, The Places You'll Go!, it makes the perfect graduation gift, encouraging readers to have a positive outlook as they learn to face life's obstacles.

Beautiful illustrations with a wonderful message about NOT being perfect. Mistakes and imperfections help build who we are and make us unique. I think it‘s so important to teach kids not to strive for perfection but instead for personal excellence.

#HeatOfJuly Day 25: When being #Weak and making mistakes turn out to be such a joy. This is a book that teachers can use to teach persistence, creativity, and the transformative quality of making art as it evolves from one thing to the next. So much beauty in this book. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A truly wonderful book of mistakes. Years ago in art class, our teacher said you never make a mistake, you just get taken down a different path. If I didn‘t know better, I would think that teacher wrote this book. The artist starts to draw a person. But one eye was bigger than the other. That was a mistake. Adding the glasses was not. I love the message that great things can come from a mistakes.

JoScho I am an art teacher and I don‘t know this book! I have to check it out ASAP! Thank you 🙏🏻 6y
LibrarianRyan @JoScho yes do. It starts out with drawing a head and one eye was bigger than the other. It was AMAZING. 6y
Kaylamburson Love this! Another book like this is Beautiful Oops and My Book of Beautiful Oops. In the first it shows you what you can do with "mistakes" like ripped pieces of paper and paint blobs. In the second it's an interactive journal for kids to actively "fix" the mistakes in the book. Really cool!! @JoScho @LibrarianRyan (edited) 6y
LibrarianRyan @Kaylamburson you are right. I love those books too. 6y

I felt like I should love this one, but I just liked it. The illustrations are detailed and the concept is wonderful, but for the most part, I didn‘t feel the text really added to the book. It easily could have been a wordless picture book and conveyed the message, although I did like the line about the leaves a lot. The illustrations are reminiscent of Philip Stead. A pretty book that is worth the read.

readordierachel Wow, that is gorgeous! 6y

Drawn with a Philip Stead style, this gorgeous book perfectly shows how a small mistake can lead to a richer, more imaginative result. Could not love this more!

Bette I thought it was very inventive too. 😊👍❤️ 7y

Another gorgeously illustrated picture book teaching kids the value of making mistakes but it might have been a bit too existential for me and my kid.

Zelma Cool illustration though. The more I look at it, the more I find. 7y

Sometimes my job @FountainBookstore is all about reading gorgeous arcs of @PenguinPublishing children's books. The Book of Mistakes is a future favorite- amazing illustrations that highlight the magic of mistakes.

Echo I am so wildly jealous of your job 6y
MidnightBookGirl @Echo I know. I spent years being jealous of bookstore employees until the opportunity arose for me, and sometimes I still can't believe how lucky I am to work around books and talk about books with customers. ❤📚 6y
