Swift as Desire
Swift as Desire: A Novel | Laura Esquivel
12 posts | 7 read | 3 to read
As the millions of fans of Like Water for Chocolate know, Laura Esquivel is a romanticist whose novels explore the power of love and the truths of the human heart. She returns to those themes in Swift as Desire, the story of a loving and passionate man who has the gift of bringing happiness to everyone except his own wife. The hero of this novel is Jbilo Chi, a telegraph operator who is born with the ability to hear peoples true feelings and respond to their most intimate, unspoken desires. His life changes forever the day he falls deeply and irrevocably in love with Lucha, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy family. She believes money is necessary to insure happiness, while for Jbilo, who is poor, love and desire are more important than possessions. But their passion for each other enables them to build a happy life together -- until their idyll is shattered by a terrible event that drives them bitterly apart. Only years later, as Jbilo lies dying, is his daughter able to unravel the mystery behind her parents long estrangement and bring about a surprising reconciliation. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

First read of 2024 is in the books ?

This was no *Like Water For Chocolate* that's for sure. But the story of Júbilo and Lucha and their daughter Lluvia was sweet. The bits of history of the telegraph were interesting. However, the extraneous, not quite, mystical elements were nothing but distracting.

Not as magical as Like Water for Chocolate but still a good story. Esquivel's writing can be musically lyrical at times, but at other times she over explains.

Pickpick

This is the 3rd book I‘ve read by Laura Esquivel and I can‘t recommend her books enough. She has a way of giving ordinary things magical qualities. She also gives you insight in other cultures and their history. This story is about love, family ,trust and how communication is vital to balance and harmony. I loved how she gave you both sides in Jubilo and Lucha relationships to see were things got lost in translation between the two.
