The first installment in a sumptuous new mystery series set in Provencefeaturing chief magistrate Antoine Verlaque, who must team up with his old flame Marine Bonnet to solve a mysterious pair of murders The next book in the Verlaque & Bonnet Provenal Mystery series, The Curse of La Fontaine, will be available from Penguin in April 2017! When local nobleman tienne de Bremont falls to his death from the family chteau, it sets the historic town of Aix-en-Provence abuzz with rumors. Antoine Verlaque, the charming chief magistrate of Aix, suspects foul play, and when he discovers that Bremont had been a close friend of Marine Bonnet, his on-again off-again girlfriend, Verlaque must turn to her for help. The once idyllic town suddenly seems filled with people who scould have benefited from Bremont's deathincluding his playboy brother Franois, who's heavily in debt and mixed up with some unsavory characters. But just as Verlaque and Bonnet are narrowing down their list of suspects, another death occurs. And this time, there can be no doubtit's murder. A lively mystery steeped in the enticing atmosphere of the south of France and seasoned with romance as rich as the French cuisine that inspires it, this first installment in the acclaimed Verlaque & Bonnet Provenal Mystery series is as addictive and captivating as Provence itself. Longworths voice is like a rich vintage of sparkling Dorothy Sayers and grounded Donna Leon. . . . Bon apptit! Booklist From the Trade Paperback edition.

Set in France, the French countryside of Aix en Provenance. Featuring a provincial judge and his on/off again girlfriend. A good back and forth between a couple trying to find their feelings while the judge investigates suspicious deaths at the Chateau de Bremont.

CarolynM I like this series a lot🙂 2y
mesquite @CarolynM I‘ll try to work through the series as I can 😁 I‘ve already got a list of 50+ books to read before the year has really started and my favorite authors start to publish! 2y
CarolynM That‘s the problem with enjoying the first book on an already established series - instant swelling of the TBR🤣 2y
mesquite @CarolynM I had already made plans to read a couple of the books. I‘ve got some standalone novels that came out last year and I got them at a good price on Amazon 😋 I also recommend trying Donna Leon and Martin Walker if you haven‘t yet! 2y

They are a good writer, no question, I would never have hated their main character this much if they hadn't crafted him so well. If Morse was French and even more of a narcissist. It evokes the South of France beautifully and develops an interesting cast of characters. But there is a lot more of MC and Ex relationship than there is following clues for the mystery, not a problem unless you hate the character.

CarolynM I really enjoy this series, mostly for the descriptions of Aix-en-Provence and the French way of life. I don‘t love Verlaque, but I don‘t dislike him as much as you😆 2y

A great start to what I think will be a new go-to cozy mystery series for me. I picked this up because of the BritBox adaptation starring Roger Allam, and it was a good choice.

For #WineorWhine #Booked2020
Not exactly about wine , but wine is everywhere: wine prices & makers & wineries & Wine festivals in Bordeaux , Corsican wine , wine tastings, wine experts, swirling wine in glasses... I hope I rest my case ( of wine 🍷🙃.
Enjoyed this book very much, it is ( as you said @CarolynM ) about the journey, looking forward to the next one in this series

Loving this book 🥰
Also I love gratin potatoes & am going to try this recipe :
Loic came into the dining room with a baking dish of scalloped potatoes.
“ Cooked on low heat for four hours, with a tub of creme fraiche , he said, .... No cheese, lads , so it‘s low fat “ 🤔 🙃

I‘m making this at the weekend !

batsy Yum! Post pics please 😁🥔 4y

#20series20days The Verlaque and Bonnet series

How the French do murder mysteries (or at least an American resident in France's take on it) An insider's view of Aix-en-Provence, history, architecture, food, wine, surrounding countryside and some places further afield. The pace is slow, it's all about the journey - in the first book investigating magistrate Verlaque stops off at a winery to taste and buy wine on his way to question a suspect.

Ruthiella Mon Dieu! You just keep ‘em coming! 😅 4y
MsMelissa I love that you are introducing me to series I‘ve never heard of! I like the sounds of this one. 4y
CarolynM @Ruthiella @Book_Fiend_Melissa ☺️ I think I'm coming to the end of my interesting ones. I could pull out some old obscurities, but I'd be lying if I said they were favourites😏 4y

I actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would. It is very slow-paced, but it fits the whole tone and atmosphere of the book and story perfectly. The crime-plotline itself is good, but there‘s also the protagonists personal problems, which surprisingly aren‘t annoying but also just fit in. Looking forward to reading book 2 in this series.
