Landbridge | Y-Dang Troeung
post image
Pickpick

Cambodian refugee Y-Dang Troeung's memoir contains fragments of stories from her life, photographs, and letters to her son, written as she battled cancer. The book is poignant, sad and informative. Tragically, Troeung passed away shortly before this book was published.

The Trees: A Novel | Percival Everett
post image
Pickpick

This was a reread for me. The story of black detectives investigating a series of murders in Mississippi, this was brilliant and darkly funny, as are all the Percival Everett books I've read.

Feb check in for #GottaCatchemAll

How are we all doing?

I've got some that I'm close to catching but beginning of the year is very scattered for me

Laughterhp I should probably log some books. I‘ve read a lot but haven‘t caught any yet. 7d
PuddleJumper @Laughterhp I lalways forget to log. I do it at the end of the month all at once 7d

llwheeler I haven't logged any yet but I've caught one! Busy week this week but hopefully will get all caught up logging in March 7d
PuddleJumper @llwheeler I'll start including yearly totals as well since a lot of people don't log per month 7d
Kenyazero So far I‘ve managed to catch murcrow, ratata, and trumbeak, and I‘m close on two others. 7d
Kenyazero Oh I just noticed the blurb about the most popular prompt 😆 7d
Faranae I need to check if I remembered to log last month. This was a bad reading month anyway. 😭 7d
Yuki_Onna @PuddleJumper Did I miss the Caught Cards for last year's challenge? I can't find mine. 7d
PuddleJumper @Yuki_Onna They're all in the GDrive - https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ob9B6xEtuHlKAYrSRzkI_vDCx81Ji-1l If it's not there/wrong let me know. I thought I'd updated them all but it was awhile ago now 7d
Yuki_Onna PuddleJumper That was the link I was looking for!👍🏻However, I caught a few more Pokémon in the end, I logged the bulk of my books in December.
I have also caught Thievul, Wooloo, Dubwool, Meowth, Ponyta, Sirfetch'd, Rookidee and Corvisquire.

PuddleJumper @Yuki_Onna No worries, I'll go back and update that. It won't be until next week, so I'll let you know when it's done 5d
Yuki_Onna Thank you @PuddleJumper❣️I'm a sucker for your caught graphics! 5d
kwmg40 February was pretty good for me. I caught Psyduck and Marshadow! 3d

Night Shift | Stephen King
post image
Pickpick

A mixed bag, as most short-story collections are, but definitely more hits than misses, and a few really memorable stories. A number of scenarios and themes reminded me of King's novels, and I wonder if he'd used these stories to try out ideas that he developed more fully later.

It was interesting to get into the heads of the young female competitive boxers featured in this novel. I liked how the author conveyed the intensity of the moment while also shifting to times in the girls' pasts and futures.

Last weekend, our area got 30cm of snow, and it put me in the mood to read the next book in remote and wintry Rockton. It's definitely more fun reading about snow than shovelling it! This was a good page-turning mystery/thriller.

LiseWorks Great series, we got 30 cm on a Thursday and then 30 more on Saturday. 😉 7d
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!!! 7d
kwmg40 @LiseWorks Wow, that is definitely more snow than we got here in Southwestern Ontario, but I'm originally from Montreal, so I've seen some pretty massive snowfalls. I hope you're all dug out now. 3d

I loved this 4th Shardlake book, as I have every book in the series so far. Shardlake hunts for a serial killer motivated by religious fanaticism. This is a page-turning mystery/thriller in an interesting historical context.

Time To Go House | Walter D. Edmonds
post image
Pickpick

My mom got this as a library discard when I was a kid, and I always loved it growing up. Smalleata is a mouse whose clan moves into the human house across the field when winter comes (and the people leave for the season). There, she falls in love with a house mouse. Lots of adventures, but it's actually pretty intense for a children's book, as some of the mice get eaten! I really enjoyed this reread and still find this a delightful book. And it ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) may help explain my reluctance to set mousetraps 😂

Suet624 I was thinking I should find it for one of my grandkids but then .... mice get eaten!!

TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - It's intense but not graphic. Kind of along the lines of the original Bambi book. One mouse gets eaten because he is willing to sacrifice himself to help the others get away. And a rat gets hunted down by weasels in what is probably the scariest scene of the book. I loved this book when I was 12ish, but it's a book I would read first before handing to a younger reader to make it's not too intense. 2w

Indian Horse | Richard Wagamese

This reread of Indian Horse was, for me, just as poignant and powerful as the first time around. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the history of residential schools in Canada and why hockey is so well-loved in this country.

This is among my favourites of the #ToB25 books I've read so far. The writing is beautiful, there were interesting and unexpected twists, and I spent some time mulling over the ending. Looking forward to the #LitsyToB discussion.
