In Defence of Dogs | John Bradshaw
6 posts | 9 read | 1 to read
What would dogs ask for, if they knew how? In the Sunday Times bestseller In Defence of Dogs John Bradshaw, an anthropologist at Bristol University who has been at the centre of the latest research into what makes dogs tick, gives us the answers.Overturning the most common myths about dogs' emotions and behaviour, this book shows how we should really treat our pets, and stands up for dogdom: not the wolf in canine clothes, not the small furry child, not the trophy-winner, but the real dog, who wants to be part of the family and enjoy life - mankind's closest friend. This is the real science that every dog lover needs to know.

John Bradshaw studied dog behavior for over 20 years before writing this, and it shows. He starts with the history/evolution of dogs, then delves into their senses and studies about their behavior. This isn‘t in any way a training manual, but it will for sure help you understand dogs better. So glad I read it.

squirrelbrain Did you read it out loud to Bindi?! 1y
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain Actually, I kind of did! 😂 I read it aloud to my mom and Bindi happened to be in the room, so I hope she got something from it. Though she was playing with her squeaky pickle through part of it so I‘m just not sure! 1y

This is why I love #bookspin ! This has been on my TBR for probably over 2 years, and now finally read as was my number 9 on my list for Oct! Really interesting read, made me want to hug my dog a little closer… but he wouldn‘t like that 😂🙄 not really spooky, but also got me some readathon hrs for #Scarathlon #TeamMonsterMash

Watching this incorrigible puppy inspired this read.

Dog Sense is an informative and engaging (occasionally repetitive) explication of what we know about dog biology. Bradshaw focuses a large portion of the book highlighting differences between dogs and wolves and ways in which making comparisons let to poorer training practices. But then he also explains dog learning, senses, emotions, and more. Useful, too, though it's not a training manual.
