Double Bind: Women on Ambition
Double Bind: Women on Ambition | Robin Romm
14 posts | 7 read | 21 to read
Urgently exploring a contentious, long-ignored paradox that confronts modern women, this anthology breaks the last feminist taboo once and for all. Even as major figures like Sheryl Sandberg and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie embrace the word “feminism,” the word “ambition” remains loaded with ambivalence. Few women describe themselves as ambitious, seeing it as synonymous with strident or aggressive; yet most feel compelled to strive and achieve—the seeming contradiction leaving them in a perpetual double bind. A formidable constellation of writers including Ayana Mathis, Molly Ringwald, Roxane Gay, and dozens more bring candor, intimacy, and wit to one of the twenty-first century’s most troubling binaries. Women who have made landmark achievements in fields as diverse as literature, law, entertainment, dog sledding, and butchery weigh in, lifting a boulder off a litany of problems about how women navigate the world around them and how they see themselves. Building on classics in the genre from the last sixty years, Double Bind breaks a long history of silence, seizing “ambition” from the roster of dirty words.

Finishing up my day reading one more chapter in this. I will be 74 pages into it. I just finished The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher. For a total of 15 hours reading! Not a win but not a total loss either.

Pickpick

A solid essay collection on ambition, particularly revealing for how uncomfortable this word made most of the authors. There is a block of essays about child/career decisions that didn't resonate with me as a woman who is childless by choice, but many others did. Roxane Gay's essay is a standout (of course), as are several others.

bobregina Thank you, I‘m definitely going to read this! (edited) 7y

Starting a new job has left little time and energy to read anything. So this collection of what ambition means to various women on the inside cover is exciting and oddly satisfying.

emilyhaldi New jobs are always completely exhausting for the first few weeks 😩 good luck!!! 7y

Guys. I want to write about this book so badly. I'm going to try to cover it for big pubs but if you have any suggestions or want to solicit a review let me know!
