The Widow's House
The Widow's House: A Novel | Carol Goodman
28 posts | 22 read | 61 to read
This chilling novel from the bestselling, award-winning author of The Lake of Dead Languages blends the gothic allure of Daphne DuMauriers Rebecca and the crazed undertones of Charlotte Perkins Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper with the twisty, contemporary edge of A.S.A. Harrisons The Silent Wifea harrowing tale of psychological suspense set in New Yorks Hudson Valley. When Jess and Clare Martin move from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to their former college town in the Hudson River valley, they are hoping for rejuvenationof their marriage, their savings, and Jess's writing career. They take a caretaker's job at Riven House, a crumbling estate and the home of their old college writing professor. While Clare once had dreams of being a writer, those plans fell by the wayside when Jess made a big, splashy literary debut in their twenties. It's been years, now, since his first novel. The advance has long been spent. Clare's hope is that the pastoral beauty and nostalgia of the Hudson Valley will offer some inspiration. But their new life isn't all quaint town libraries and fragrant apple orchards. There is a haunting pall that hangs over Riven House like a funeral veil. Something is just not right. Soon, Clare begins to hear babies crying at night, see strange figures in fog at the edge of their property. Diving into the history of the area, she realizes that Riven House has a dark and anguished past. And whatever this thing isthis menacing force that destroys the inhabitants of the estateit seems to be after Clare next

I really love Carol Goodman and this one did not disappoint. Great atmospheric mystery with a ghost story mixed in. If you enjoy gothic tales, you‘ll enjoy this one—a big old house, some strange happenings, and a decades old mystery combine for a quick listen. Cassandra Campbell, as always, is an A+ narrator. #audiobook

I finished this book on the plane today - very gothic and left me guessing as to what was real and what wasn‘t. I loved the Yellow Wallpaper nods especially. Even though I think this was an abandoned church, it feels like an appropriate image... I think it‘s the coolest graffiti I‘ve ever seen, and it looks like it was really hard work! I‘ll share a couple more Azores pics after this one. It was so lovely there!!

robinb Wow. That‘s amazing! 😮 6y

Another great Gothic read by Goodman. I loved the atmospheric setting, the twisty plot, and the overall creepiness of the story. I spent all day reading it!

Finally!!!?

I won this and got the notification back in early March. March!

After notifying Goodreads via their Give-away page with no luck, I finally emailed Goodreads directly via their "support" email contact on Monday, lo and behold it was on my doorstep this evening when I got home!!! ???

I love her books and this one sounds wonderfully sinister. ??☻

Whew! Another one knocked off the towering TBR. Not a bad book really. A pretty good mystery about an old death, inheritance and infidelity. I would give it 3 star rating, but will not be a reread.

I love ghost stories; I love haunted house stories. Add in the magical combo of "The Yellow Wallpaper" meets Rebecca, and I am sold.

I was really hooked by this fab diverting weekend read. Fun, moody, with a what-what?! sort of kicker that had me doubting the entire story (in the best way!), this book reminded me of good, classic gothic fic and insidious haunted houses. (So good, I reread the last four chapters while working on this review!)

JazzFeathers Ifvit's a ghost story, l'm in :) 8y

Jealousy, murder, madness, ghosts… The more Clare untangles the knot of secrets in this gothic and ghostly story, the less clear the truth of it all appears. It's a compelling and thrilling read from start to finish. (I received a free copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.) #LyricalApril #MadWorld

Discovered a little free library today with a bunch of good looking ARCs! I wanted to take them all, but alas! Share the wealth and such. So I just grabbed this one. I loved Goodman's book The Lake of Dead Languages. Am feeling hopeful for this one! Paired with Townshend's Happiness tea blend.

valeriegeary The other book I mentioned. 8y
