You'll Never Know, Dear: A Novel of Suspense
You'll Never Know, Dear: A Novel of Suspense | Hallie Ephron
25 posts | 19 read | 29 to read
An addictive novel of psychological suspense from the award-winning author of Night Night, Sleep Tight, about three generations of women haunted by a little girl's disappearance, and the porcelain doll that may hold the key to the truth . . .Seven-year-old Lissie Woodham and her four-year-old sister Janey were playing with their porcelain dolls in the front yard when an adorable puppy scampered by. Eager to pet the pretty dog, Lissie chased after the pup as it ran down the street. When she returned to the yard, Janey's precious doll was gone . . . and so was Janey.Forty years after Janey went missing, Lis--now a mother with a college-age daughter of her own--still blames herself for what happened. Every year on the anniversary of her sister's disappearance, their mother, Miss Sorrel, places a classified ad in the local paper with a picture of the toy Janey had with her that day--a one-of-a-kind porcelain doll--offering a generous cash reward for its return. For years, there's been no response. But this year, the doll came home.It is the first clue in a decades-old mystery that is about to turn into something far more sinister--endangering Lis and the lives of her mother and daughter as well. Someone knows the truth about what happened all those years ago, and is desperate to keep it hidden.

This author (literally) wrote the book on writing mystery and suspense novels. I think most, if not all, of her books have been nominated for Agatha awards. This is the 2nd of her books I've read, and while she definitely knows how to plant seeds and plot, I just don't enjoy her writing style. Or her characters. I think it's best I stop reading her fiction, but her guide for Writer's Digest is great. (This one was about creepy dolls, thus the pic.)

I really enjoyed the characters and the twists and turns. I couldn't think ahead of the plot for awhile but eventually I could and did. It was an easy read and nothing you had to think too hard about so it was like enjoying a scenic ride. The ending was rather crafty, although I wanted to know if Vanessa got what she'd been working for.

So far so good, but then again I am waiting for the proverbial $h!t to hit the fan. I'm hooked though so that's always a plus.

For #hallowreads #someoneswatchingsunday I'm updating my #autumnbingo sheet with the tagged book as #someoneswatching
Throughout the book, I think it's obvious that there is a pair of very keen eyes watching everyone's movements-which is both annoying and infuriating because the characters don't seem to see the obvious!

This is definitely a slow burn mystery. Not nearly as creepy as I would have thought all the dolls to be ? well written, good pacing, mostly well developed characters (though maybe the sheer number of them made that difficult), but I actually figured out the ending and for however many of the last chapters was inwardly screaming at the characters "how have you not figured this out!!!????"

This is a great suspenseful mystery! While a bit predictable, the book still totally captivated me! Check out my full review here: http://www.ericarobynreads.com/2017/08/book-review-youll-never-know-dear.html?m=...

SilversReviews @bookwrm526 LOL!! the cover is creepier than the book. 7y
bookwrm526 @SilversReviews If the doll is in any way sentient or animate, then that's a hard pass. If not, then I might give it a try lol 7y
SilversReviews @bookwrm526 the doll is sentimental. The book is actually a mystery. 7y

This book was just okay for me. I felt that the middle dragged and I was having trouble getting to the end. Once I hit the last third of the book, it picked back up and pulled me back in. I had some trouble connecting to the characters as well. However, I did keep reading because I wanted to find out the answer to the mystery.

SilversReviews I liked this book...good suspense. 7y

Had the pleasure of meeting Hallie Ephron tonight. We had invited her to speak at my library about her new book. She is such a great speaker! The full room was totally engaged in her talk. She spoke of her family, her history and her writing process. Such a great night! (And this book sounds super creepy too!😱)

GypsyKat Mmmm, Earl Grey tea is delicious! 7y
Avanders @GypsyKat Mmmm I love all the variations... oddly, my mom doesn't like it at all ... how?! 🤷🏽‍♀️ 7y
GypsyKat @Avanders I love tea, I drink it every morning. My brother hates the taste of tea. I don't get it either. But, I absolutely hate Green Tea. I've had every kind you can possibly imagine, including some extremely expensive stuff directly from Japan. It all just tastes like grass to me. (edited) 7y
Avanders @GypsyKat Funny .. I also hate green tea for the same reason except 2: Garden Bouquet from St James Tearoom and the Pineapple one from Harney and Sons. Funny how our tastes do that 😉 But I also looove teas in general ... my SIL got me a tea advent calendar last year! See http://swatchandreview.com/davidstea-24-days-of-tea-advent-calendar-2016-is-comi... (only available seasonally) 🎉 (edited) 7y

Soooo many dolls. And not creepy just odd. Implausible and silly which I usually don't mind. But this one was dull. It was ok. . .

ferskner I'm in the acknowledgements! That never ceases to thrill me. :) 7y

ferskner Hahahaha I'm so goofily thrilled by it. I liked this book but I think I was swayed by the fact that it's based on my town. I wasn't surprised by the end at all. 7y

My #apriltbr, at least the books I HAVE to read for book clubs and such. The empty space is for You'll Never Know, Dear by Hallie Ephron, which is on my Kindle. I hosted her at the library last year (which she graciously did for free!!!) when she was in town doing research for this book, so I'm killer excited to read the result. #aprilbookshowers @RealLifeReading
