In 1558, while exiled by Queen Mary Tudor to a remote castle known as Perilous Gard, young Kate Sutton becomes involved in a series of mysterious events that lead her to an underground world peopled by Fairy Folk—whose customs are even older than the Druids‘ and include human sacrifice.

Trying to get back to all my bookish activities that were taken over by our move. I still don't have my books back yet. (Friday hopefully!) But I wanted to do Day 3 of #uncannyoctober What more perfect fables and folklore books can you find in October than Tam Lin retellings?

Set in the Tudor era, Kate is exiled to a remote castle. She encounters the #mysteriousways of the attractive, elusive younger brother of the owner, as well as that of the villagers themselves. Woodlore, myths and ancient Druid beliefs clash with new religion in an absorbing, atmospheric tale. I reviewed it, with kind-of spoilers, here: https://disquietblog.wordpress.com/2010/09/01/the-small-matter-of-paganism/. #rockinmay @Cinfhen

batsy @shawnmooney @LeahBergen It's supposedly YA, which might put some people off, maybe (?) But it's beautifully written and complex. 👍 8y

saresmoore Gosh, what a thorough and engaging review! I, too, am fascinated by Celtic/pre-Christian mythology, so I think I will really like this one. 8y
batsy @saresmoore Thanks! And on the plus side it's a quick read. That's a good thing in these difficult times of ever-expanding TBRs 😰 8y
LauraBrook I read the first in this set, and am saving this one bc I liked the first so much! 8y
batsy @LauraBrook Ooh, is it part of a series? I wasn't aware of that! 8y

graces of Queen Mary and sent to live in a remote castle with a secret and possibly dangerous past. She meets up with superstitious villagers, a gruff but lovable Lord of the castle, his mysterious and vexed (oh, and handsome, of course) younger brother, a disturbed but friendly troubadour, and a charm of wicked fairies. Kate is smart and stubborn and a bit clumsy, but strong, too, in all sorts of ways. In short, reader, I love her. And her story.

I love this book! Kate is one of my all time favorite heroines, the victim of circumstance she manages to survive and even thrive.
