I really enjoyed this. Steinbeck tells the story of union organizers in depression-era America.

Jim Nolan and Mac work to organize a strike among the migrant apple pickers in Depression-era California. They work to get the men to stand up for themselves against the farm owners, the Growers Association, and local law enforcement. Will all the frustration they endure pay off? This is one of Steinbeck's lesser-known works, over-shadowed by The Grapes of Wrath for its depiction of migrant workers. This was an enjoyable, sometimes graphic, story.

More challenges for 2018! Part 2 of #theunreadshelfproject2018 - finish more Steinbeck. These were purchased at the National Steinbeck Center gift shop during a quick stopover in 2016. A few titles were for re-reading and some are works I've loved for the title alone (like "The Winter of Our Discontent") but never read.

I had not heard of this title before. I wasn't going to get it until I flipped it open. The pages are cool looking. This edition is also from the 60s, the announcement for Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize is printed on the inside jacket flap.

I really feel like this word is way underused in daily conversation...

This story of labor organizers and migrant fruit pickers is interesting and timely. We follow Mac, a seasoned organizer, and Jim, basically a trainee, as they try to get their strike off ground. I found the lack of motivation from the pickers to better themselves frustrating. This lack in motivation leads Mac to be rather ruthless, which was often hard to stomach. I don't have many political fiction books but I think this counts today.

In dubious battle should be read in highschool instead of "Of Mice and Men". Both are superb but I feel like In Dubious Battle is a little more relevant to today's political climate.
