Herbs for Natural Beauty | Rosemary Gladstar

For much of the book the author talks about the criticality of "all-natural" beauty products...yet she occasionally uses synthetic fragrance oils??

This is a good starter to the art of beekeeping. Although if you're serious on trying, you'll want to consult more thorough research (and the author gives a list of resources at the end). Still, this provides a simple introduction on what is needed, the process, and the life of the honeybee. If you want to understand the basics and see what the buzz is about, this is a good book to begin with. It also includes colorful pics and honey recipes!

Scott states that there are books on style, organization, etc. yet nothing really puts them all together. She boldly asserts that this is the book! Inspired by her French friends as well as a stint living in Paris, she brings tips of elegance to the drudgery of everyday life. I was surprised there was so much detail on managing children. Her main message is to savor simple pleasures throughout the day and create a sense of luxury for the mundane.

A small book with not so small messages. Dolly expands upon her popular commencement speech at the University of Tennessee to inspire us all to dream more, learn more, care more, and ultimately be more. She shares personal stories, her approach to work, her feelings on reading, and her own "wit and wisdom from the Dolly-Mama". With a positive yet honest tone, Dolly encourages us to pursue our own dreams without forgetting what's most important.

I wanted to like this. The themes carry creative momentum. The problem? Too many. The author introduces numerous interesting topics but never fully develops any into an engaging story. What he creates is fragmented; a plethora of surface-level issues. Instead, choose one and give it space to grow into something real and engaging! As is, the style comes across gimmicky, which is a shame - especially given the potential of the subjects introduced.

The first sentence is "Lydia is dead". As those close to her try to understand why, the reader becomes an observer of the Lee family. Like any family, there are secrets, and we see their struggle with the notion that maybe Lydia was not who they thought. Just how well do those we are closest to really know us? How much do we bend our identities to meet the expectations of others? These questions are explored by Ng, and cause our own introspection.

Anderson Cooper spends a year dedicated to a deeper understanding of his mother (Gloria Vanderbilt), resulting in a book in which she shares the stories and feelings of her unique existence. She describes her unstable childhood, her loves (including Howard Hughes and Frank Sinatra), her losses (watching the suicide of her son), as well as her artistic career and her take on life as a nonagenarian. It's an easy read with a fascinating perspective.

This was a treasure trove of information on the period, ranging from Edwardian etiquette for a ball to the popular sports of the day. The extensive bibliography list provides readers with numerous resources pertaining to the era. The drawback is that the writing, although strong in the beginning, gets sloppy toward the middle and is rushed at the end. I recommended it as a great historical perspective, so long as poor editing can be looked past .

This book is a stirring collection of stories and poems by young people from many American Indian nations. Although several of the works share similar themes (e.g., dissonance between heritage and contemporary culture), they are ones with which readers of other ages and backgrounds can connect with in their hearts. The young people who've contributed are more than just their ethnicity...they are powerful writers whose work is worth a read .

On this date in 1942, Little Golden Books launched, "democratizing reading for young Americans". At this time, children's books were between $2-3 (a luxury for many families), whereas these books cost 25 cents each. Over time it wasn't just affordability, but lovable characters, memorable illustrations, and valuable lessons that kindled the joy of reading in many of us.

Which titles did you enjoy?

The book is its own outre tour de force beyond just a clown. Although there are a few loose ends, I wonder if this was purposeful to allow the reader's imagination to take them in whatever delicious direction of their mind's delight. It may not be a perfect and happy novel, but it allows anyone who has ever felt like a loner to be a member of the Loser's Club through the full spectrum of emotions and have courage to face what only a "loser" can.
