Pretty Poison
Pretty Poison | Lynne Barron
5 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
What's an American heiress to do when a pair of britches, a plunge into a pond in the dead of winter and a broken betrothal force her to set sail across the ocean to an arranged marriage with a fortune-hunting Englishman? With her hopes and dreams sinking to the bottom of the sea like so much lost treasure, Emily Calvert falls into the pretty poison she finds in a little blue bottle. Can Nicholas Avery, a charming aristocrat with a faulty memory for names and a family in dire need of financial salvation, convince the wounded lady that the blessed oblivion she finds in his arms is sweeter than laudanum?

In my early days as a #Litten I thought I'd start posting books I wanted to read with a woman holding something #BehindHerBack. Especially loved The Magician's Lie & The Book of Lost Names. @tpixie joined in 3 years ago with The Engineer's Wife, which was also really good. Then I guess I gave up. Anyway, Pretty Poison is one of the several I never read. #NewYearNewBooks #InvolvesPoison @eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Read this some time last year. It was a sweet romance that I enjoyed so much, it only took me a day to start and finish it. #readingresolutions #poison

Mehso-so

Well I just finished this lovely book. I managed to finish it in one day, so I'm happy to not taken a few days like other books in the past (plus my tbr pile is huge). I liked the romance parts. How it wasn't love at first sight but ended with the two main characters in passionate love. ❤️

"Nick had clearly seen the relief on Oliver's face when he announced he would marry the girl. The Lady. Four and twenty, on the shelf. Oliver's wife Joan, had joined the family at eighteen. Now, six years later, she was an old married lady, the same as Ellen the spinster. Esmeralda?"

I guess in the 1800's 24 was considered old? I'm almost 28 and still feel as young as a teenager lol.

DivineDiana I hear you! So happy that times have changed in that regard! 8y
