"Witty...a cheerful extravaganza."--The New YorkerHis exploits were legendary...Captain John Staple, back from the battlefront, is already bored with his quiet civilian life in the country. When he stumbles upon a mystery involving a disappearing toll-gate keeper, nothing could keep the adventure-loving captain from investigating. But winning her will be his greatest yet...The plot thickens when John encounters the enigmatic Lady Nell Stornaway and soon learns that rescuing her from her unsavory relatives makes even the most ferocious cavalry charge look like a particularly tame hand of loo. Between hiding his true identity from Nell and the arrival in the neighborhood of some distinctly shady characters, Captain Staple finds himself embarked on the adventure-and romance-of a lifetime."Spritely and good fun."-New York Herald Tribune"Once again Georgette Heyer has directed her comic genius along the fictional highway of early nineteenth-century England, but this time...cleaves with refreshing persistence to the commoner levels of life."-Chicago Sunday Tribune"Told in elegant prose with exceptionally humorous dialogue by the Queen of Regency romance."-Good Book Guide

Yay!! I finished a book!! 😂

I honestly can't believe I had never read this Heyer before! The romance (while adorable) is rather secondary to the mysterious disappearance of a man in charge of a turnpike. With loads of entertaining characters, complicated motivations, and a dramatic ending, this one was just an incredibly fun romp.

TheAromaofBooks @mabell @Chrissyreadit @Julieclair - Hey friends!!! Are we interested in starting another round? Do we need more time? I was kind of thinking if we wanted to do August-November, then we could take December for holidays/catch-up. Let me know what you think!!! 1y
Librarybelle I need to read more Heyer! 1y
Chrissyreadit i am wanting to- but full disclosure i forgot to pack Auntie Mame for my California trip- so need to read it, but i feel ok about reading another Heyer or light romp in August too. 1y

mabell I‘m so glad you enjoyed it! It was fun to read it again, and I can‘t wait to see everyone‘s comments 😄 I could start in August! I‘ll start getting a few choices together. 1y
julieclair August - November works for me! Although I still have to read The Five Minute Marriage from the last round. 🙄 Time to look at choices! Fun!!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Librarybelle - I honestly have yet to pick up a bad one!! I know that she wrote mysteries as well as historical romance, but I haven't tried any of those yet. After reading this one with its splash of mystery, I'm inspired to pick one up!! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @mabell @julieclair - Yay!! We'll pull together some choices and see what we can find for the next round. I enjoy our group so much!!! 1y
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks Same!!! this is the fun fluffy read i seem to crave and need but never realized how much until Heyer! 1y

Such a fun adventure, just as fun on rereading! Quite a different set of characters and situation than you usually find in a Heyer. I hope you all enjoy it! I‘ll get it on its way to you, Chrissy!

julieclair I'm chuckling at the cover. Seems like almost every book I've been reading has a horse involved. Wonder if it's some sort of sign, lol. 🐎 2y
mabell @julieclair Ha that‘s funny! A sign the Kentucky Derby is coming up? 😆 2y
julieclair @mabell Maybe it's a sign I should place a bet on the Derby. If there's a horse named Toll Gate, or Heyer, I'll know it's a sure winner! 😂 2y

mabell @julieclair If there is, let me know! I‘m definitely putting money on it too! 🤣 2y
CarolynM Stacking because I need to keep expanding my Heyer reading🙂 2y
TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I'm excited about this one!! 2y
mabell @CarolynM It‘s a bit different type of storyline, but quite fun and filled with classic Heyer wit! 2y
mabell @TheAromaofBooks I can‘t wait to see what you think! (In 2-3 months 😂) 2y

Unsurprisingly, I loved it! Georgette Heyer crafts the most delightful characters & lands them in the trickiest situations - it is impossible not to be swept up in the story & fly through the pages. Have your Regency phrasebook at the ready to keep up with the slang from bow street runner (police) to bridle cull (highwayman) to soldier, alongside the “refined” speech of the gentry. Adventure, mystery, romance & wit - I already want to reread it!

mabell Thank you for sending it @Chrissyreadit and thank you for my lovely book sleeve @Gissy ❤️ 3y
Chrissyreadit Yay!!! 3y
Gissy Yes! Lovely booksleeve, it match the book perfectly 👌 3y

LeahBergen Lovely! This one‘s still waiting on my shelves. 3y
mabell @Chrissyreadit ❤️❤️❤️ 3y
mabell @Gissy It did! It is the nicest booksleeve! Such a pretty pattern, and it is just the right size and padding. It‘s been to Europe and Costa Rica with me! 3y
mabell @LeahBergen So much fun! I honestly would reread it now, but I also have The Grand Sophy waiting. 🤣 3y
Gissy @mabell It has traveled☺️ 3y
Gissy Hi! Is your Litsy tbr updated? I will be sending something this month as a belated birthday box🤗 3y
mabell @Gissy I‘ve been working on yours too!! 😄 My TBR is up to date - is yours? 3y
Gissy @mabell Yes!
I‘m training now for a small triathlon, they call it sprint because the distances are so short. But I‘m terrify for the swimming part. I‘m not a good swimmer at all. It is only 750 meters but it‘s in open ocean😬🥺I don‘t know what I was thinking when I submitted the inscription😟
3y
mabell @Gissy Yikes! I‘m a so-so swimmer, and I get tired very quickly, so that definitely sounds scary! 🤞 You fly through the swimming! When is the triathlon? 3y
Gissy @mabell It will be next December 19th. It is a local event. I‘m participating in the sprint category which should be the easy one🙄but not necessarily easy for me🥺The training is different and for me complicated because it includes practicing in the bike, swim and run and you can feel tire😓sometimes 3y
mabell @Gissy It sounds absolutely daunting! But good job for trying something new, different, and challenging! It will be totally worth it, and remember - you‘re a finisher! 💪 3y
Chrissyreadit How are you??? I was thinking about you today! My plants are mostly gone and I‘m ready for Spring 🌞🤣 3y
mabell @Chrissyreadit Doing great! How are you?? The plants are fading fast. I brought in the pots that can‘t stay out (Olive and fig trees), and grabbed a few green tomatoes before the freeze warning! I am avidly watching the forecast for the first snow!! ❄️🌧❄️🌧 3y
Chrissyreadit Ohh!! My fig tree grows outside in the ground but I‘ve been thinking about an olive tree! Is it hard? 3y
mabell @Chrissyreadit Well, I buy every plant on the expectation it‘s going to die, but these have been doing ok! We‘ll see how they do inside over winter. The watering balance is the hard part! 3y

It‘s been a little while since I read Georgette Heyer, and I had almost forgotten how much I liked her books! This one had a little less romance and a little more exciting adventure/mystery than some of the others. Really a fun book! I wish there was a sequel to this one with a continuation of the character‘s stories.

A missing toll-gate keeper, a robbery, a shady character visiting the district, a dying man, and a maid in distress keep Captain John detained on his way to visit a friend. A delightful mystery and romance from Heyer.

Heyer is always there for me when I need a fun and fluffy palate cleanser. This isn't one of my favorites so far, but sitting down with any of her books feels like having a cozy chat with an old friend.
