Pickpick

This is one of my all-time favorite books and I have read it probably 25-30 times over my lifetime. The characters, the setting, the fact that a few of the moments in this book still make me choke up even after all these rereads - this book is close to perfect to me.

SO IT WAS A COMPLETE SHOCK to find out that in the 1940s random sentences/paragraphs were edited out!!! The edition I grew up reading, despite clearly saying it was “unabridged“ ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) was, in fact, abridged! As was virtually every edition published from 1942-2010! But in 2010 a restored text was published. Since I didn't know it existed, I didn't seek it out, but I just so happened to purchase this edition a couple of years ago as my old faithful Bantam paperback is wearing out and I love this cover. Turns out, it's the 2010 text. So obviously I didn't read the two editions side by side noting every passage I could ⬇ 3d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) find that had been removed, because that would be ridiculous. But if I did, the note in the picture indicates how heavily each chapter was edited - ✔is unabridged, - is only a couple words or a sentence, + is several sentences, and ++ is multiple paragraphs.

I'm still completely befuddled as to why these passages were removed. It's true, nothing vital was taken out, but there are moments of humor, depth, and character, that were cut. ⬇
3d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) A lot of the editing were various speeches of Susan's, so maybe they just decided they didn't like her character...???? But other moments, like Rilla clinging to hope so as to not 'break faith' with Walter, Anne recounting the hair-dying episode of her youth, or more details of how Dog Monday settled in at the station, seemed so arbitrary to remove.

So it was kind of fun to do a little treasure hunt and discover that there is even more ⬇

swynn Ridiculous? I don't know, reading the two editions side by side noting every passage that had been removed or altered sounds perfectly reasonable to me. How else would you know? Thanks for sharing your research! (edited) 3d
Librarybelle That‘s incredible! 5 years left…way to go!!! 3d
rubyslippersreads My copy is from 1921, so I think I‘m safe. 😊 Have you heard of this book? 3d
Kristin_Reads That‘s amazing! I would have never guessed! 3d
CSeydel Wow! 3d
BooksandCoffee4Me I‘ve never heard of it, but I want to read it. Hope I can find a true version. 3d
BarbaraJean And obviously I'm not going to go through your handy notes and check out all the differences between the two versions... and I'm also not reading the original unaltered edition in the ebook with my print versions at hand so I can check anything that doesn't sound familiar... 😆

It absolutely IS like a treasure hunt!! I love your perspective that it's like finding out there's MORE to love. I've been feeling betrayed by my old faithful Bantams!!
2d
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - OOoo a first edition, so fun!! I have a few Anne books from the 1930s, but not Rilla. I hadn't heard of that book, but definitely want to check it out!! 2d
TheAromaofBooks @BarbaraJean - You can let me know if you find anything in the chapters I thought were intact - sometimes it would just be even a word. For instance, one time Rilla is cuddling Jims and says something like “I hope your poor little mother knows you're safe.“ Except in the original it's “poor little white mother“ and they cut the word white - which I feel like in this instance is more a reference to her being frail/sick rather than her actual race?⬇ 2d
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) But I have also felt rather betrayed by my old Bantams that I grew up reading!! So crazy!! 2d

This one was okay. The pacing was choppy/slow, and a lot of the character motivations just didn't work for me. I also get annoyed whenever I hear the “if you don't want the government tracking/checking your every move you're obviously a criminal“ argument: it's simply not true. It was a fun concept, but the execution just didn't quite work for me.

The move is progressing!! My windowsill books have moved to the piano for now. The bottom picture is an attempt to fit all my crates of books into one picture (unsuccessfully) - ended up with 96 crates of books + a few boxes.

I had read this Agatha Christie mystery before, but as usually couldn't remember the solution 😂 I'm the worst armchair detective ever, but it doesn't reduce my enjoyment of reading and rereading Christie's tales. ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) The romance was pretty unbelievable for me, but I still found the story entertaining. And honestly I think Poirot is so dang likable.

Time To Go House | Walter D. Edmonds

My mom got this as a library discard when I was a kid, and I always loved it growing up. Smalleata is a mouse whose clan moves into the human house across the field when winter comes (and the people leave for the season). There, she falls in love with a house mouse. Lots of adventures, but it's actually pretty intense for a children's book, as some of the mice get eaten! I really enjoyed this reread and still find this a delightful book. And it ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) may help explain my reluctance to set mousetraps 😂

Suet624 I was thinking I should find it for one of my grandkids but then .... mice get eaten!!
3mo
TheAromaofBooks @Suet624 - It's intense but not graphic. Kind of along the lines of the original Bambi book. One mouse gets eaten because he is willing to sacrifice himself to help the others get away. And a rat gets hunted down by weasels in what is probably the scariest scene of the book. I loved this book when I was 12ish, but it's a book I would read first before handing to a younger reader to make it's not too intense. 3mo

Gift from the Sea | Anne Morrow Lindbergh
post image
Pickpick

I first read this book back in 2012 and knew it was one I wanted to find and add to my own collection. Lindbergh writes from a seaside cottage where she is on holiday, each chapter looking at a different seashell and using it to reflect on a different aspect of life. Published in 1955, it was an era where woman were still mostly home-focused, but with advancing technology opening up more time and opportunities for them. I found her thoughts on ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) the importance of seeking solitude, finding creative work/hobbies, understanding and accepting that relationships go through cycles, and finding ways to take time to ground yourself to be thoughtful and encouraging.

TheAromaofBooks At only 128 pages, this is a slim volume and I enjoyed chewing on a chapter a day. I've been meaning to revisit this one for years, and thanks to the #MonthlyNonfiction challenge I picked up this 128 (Philosophy/Epistemology/Humankind) and checked the 100s off the list!! @julieclair

I was delighted to pick up this lovely hardcover/library discard edition of this book, which is the sequel to The Alley. Both written and set about 8 years after the original story, the main character is one of the younger siblings of The Alley's characters. This one was a little more implausible, but still a super fun story and one that I would have LOVED as a kid. These are both fabulous read-aloud books and as cute as they can be.

This is an older book of Roberts's (1991), which was mainly illustrated by how many cigarettes the MC smoked 😂 Cilla a night DJ for a Denver radio station who starts getting threatening calls from a listener who says he wants revenge and is going to kill her. You'll be unsurprised to learn that Cilla ends up with a hot, single detective to help her through these trying times. This book definitely had some weak spots in the suspense aspect of ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) of the plot, but as usual Roberts writes likable and engaging characters. The next book is about Cilla's sister, and I'll definitely be reading that one soon.

I first bought, read, and loved this book back in 2020. Now that we're getting ready to move and I have an entire house to update, it seemed like a great time to revisit it. Atwood just does a fantastic job with this book. She gives you the science behind color and our perception of it, then moves into the more emotional aspect of it - somehow, she stays out of woo-woo land by encouraging readers to ground the way they feel about colors with ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) practical application. There is a section visiting homes of various people who work with color (as home decorators and the like), and even with the homes that I didn't like, Atwood still points out tips for incorporating the methods used. The final section talks about how to create your own color wheel and palettes for different spaces. Just like when I read it the first time, this book immediately had me looking at everything around me ⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) differently, looking at undertones, connecting colors, the way textures can change color, etc. Even if you aren't getting ready to redecorate your house, I still high recommend this one as it goes beyond just slapping some paint on walls, with tips on making small changes (even things like putting a bowl of fruit on your table) to brighten spaces and tie things together. A perfect balance between science, feelings, and practical ⬇ 3mo

DogMomIrene This book sounds fantastic! We‘re not ready to paint…yet…so may be the perfect read to start thinking about wall colors. Thanks! 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @DogMomIrene - She has lots of ideas for testing colors using other items in your space, plus seeing how you feel about those colors at different times of day and different lighting. So I think it's a great book to read while you're still in the thinking stage!! 3mo
AnnCrystal Does this talk about precisely which colors affect which mood (orange can encourage eating and conversation, green can calm you, blue can make you feel safe)? Or is it vague about direct emotional affects and more about how colors work together to appease the eye? 3mo
Lcsmcat We‘ve been trying to decide what color to paint the dining room for YEARS. Sounds like I need to read this book. 😀 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @AnnCrystal - Both, but I would say more the latter than the former. There is a section where she talks about each color, its history, and an overview of how it generally impacts mood and space, which leads into how combining different colors can be appealing, sometimes because it's also combining two feelings (blue for comfort + orange for warmth & energy). The author definitely believes that color is personal and encourages the reader to think ⬇ 3mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) about memories and places that may influence how YOU feel about a color beyond how it is “supposed“ to make you feel. (I.e. I got teased wearing a red dress when I was little and still don't like the color red.) So while she does give the broad strokes to general color+mood theory, she talks more about discovering what appeals to you personally and how to help focus that into a harmonic whole. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @Lcsmcat - The author is so warm and friendly and I love the tips that she gives for experimenting with color before making big commitments. 3mo
AnnCrystal @TheAromaofBooks perfect, Thank You! 👏☺️👍📚🎨💝. 3mo
DogMomIrene @TheAromaofBooks Totally where we are! We‘ve been in this house for just over a year and we haven‘t hung any art because we‘re still moving things around, making sure we like how we‘re moving around various spaces. I checked my library and they don‘t have it, so I‘m buying it and savoring it🥰 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @DogMomIrene - I hope you love it!! It has sprayed edges and a wonderful matte finish on the cover, so many pictures - I find it a joy to handle as well as read haha 3mo

I loved this book growing up, and it definitely encouraged my ongoing love affair with alleys 😂 I hadn't read this one in several years, and it was super fun to revisit. Cleery buys a box of magic at a flea market, and accidentally magics a stuffed crow into being alive - and able to talk - but not able to fly. With an enchantment of being able to find something magical in every new alley she visits that summer, she and her best friend set off ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) to find a cure for Crow. This is just a cute, fun book with little adventures in every chapter. Thoroughly enjoyable.

At first, I enjoyed Blair's sassy attitude, but after a while the flirting aka bickering between the two MCs began to get on my nerves. It could be because my husband and I are both super chill so I've never understood the “arguing as foreplay“ concept lol The mystery aspect didn't make a lot of sense either, which meant the entire plot began to drag around 2/3 through. It was an okay read, but one of those that I enjoyed less as I went along.

willaful Nothing will put me husband in a less romantic mood than arguing. I will never experience angry sex. 😂 3mo
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - Literally he would be like “stop“ and she would be “make me“. Every time he would tell her to do something (because he's a cop and SOMEONE IS TRYING TO KILL HER) she would just do the opposite and he would find it soooo sexy 🙄 After a while all the power-wrestling began to wear on me because that is just not how things roll around here 😂 Like you, if we're having a bicker, I do NOT expect it to be followed up with sexy times 😆 3mo
