Girl in the Dark
Girl in the Dark: A Memoir | Anna Lyndsey
17 posts | 22 read | 50 to read
Haunting, lyrical, unforgettable, Girl in the Dark is a brave new memoir of a life without light. Anna Lyndsey was young and ambitious and worked hard; she had just bought an apartment; she was falling in love. Then what started as a mild intolerance to certain kinds of artificial light developed into a severe sensitivity to all light. Now, at the worst times, Anna is forced to spend months on end in a blacked-out room, where she loses herself in audiobooks and elaborate word games in an attempt to ward off despair. During periods of relative remission, she can venture out cautiously at dawn and dusk into a world that, from the perspective of her cloistered existence, is filled with remarkable beauty. And through it all there is Pete, her love and her rock, without whom her loneliness seems boundless. One day Anna had an ordinary life, and then the unthinkable happened. But even impossible lives, she learns, endure. Girl in the Dark is a tale of an unimaginable fate that becomes a transcendent love story. It brings us to an extraordinary place from which we emerge to see the light and the world anew.

And I thought quarantine was bad. Anna Lyndsey has severe light sensitivity, leaving her unable most days to leave a completely blacked out room. In the dark, she listens to audiobooks and plays word games, talks to friends and her husband, tries to find a cure. A good reality check for my current moaning about how tired I am of being at home. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just finished this book today.
Interesting memoir of a woman who developes and lives with light sensitivity disorder.
She talks about how it begins and the new challenges this entails for her and for the people around her.
A fascinating look into her very personal thoughts and experiences which are so very painful and limiting.
I enjoyed learning about her life and gained an appreciation for the ease of a life in the light.

"When I finish a book, I find I cannot start another one immediately. Each book needs time to settle in my mind. To be digested, like a meal of many courses. It seems disrespectful to the characters to move on too quickly. After all, I've spent hours in their company, learned their histories, looked on at significant moments of their lives.
I still have nagging questions in my mind, surely someone would have noticed the substitution of the body."

First book of 2019 done! It was just okay for me, I just had a hard time connecting with her. 🤷‍♀️ Here was just a lot of the book that I found frustrating, including the lack of medical care. It seemed like it was so easily given up on, she couldn‘t make the appointment in London and then that was it. Maybe it was the way the book was written but I found that hard to get past. Oh well.

I've been sick since before Christmas and it seems to be getting worse. This has been on my TBR pile for a while now so I'm going to spend the day in bed reading.

I went to add my book to Goodreads, and the app didn't work and the website is down. How can I read my book if I can't put it on a Goodreads?! I'm going to go sit in a corner and cry while continuously reloading the website... #justkidding #notreally #goodreadsoritdoesntcount

This is unquestionably my favorite book of the year so far. I have so many feelings! It is so poignant, so true to the experience of chronic illness, so heartbreaking that I cried. And then I laughed with her. Because at times, I understood exactly how she felt even though, thank God, I've never experienced anything like what she is going through. Bonus: she loves books! Full review to come on my blog.

Wow, I just started listening to this and have been blown away by the writing and the narration! As a person with chronic illness, though thankfully not anything as extreme as the author's condition, I recognize a lot of her statements as true and beautifully phrased. I'm experiencing a lot of those "Yes, that's it exactly!" moments. So far I have been powerfully moved by this memoir.

Well written account of a devastating condition. Loved that it prominently featured the word crepuscular, one of my favorites.

"And the words are little sparks in the darkness, because they make something flash up in your consciousness, as on a computer screen. Each one a tiny stimulus, a mental pinprick; one of those jolts of electricity that keep you alive." Amazing grab at the library!

ChasingOm This was a FASCINATING read. I've never appreciated sunshine so much. ☀️ 8y
