The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray
The Uncensored Picture of Dorian Gray | Oscar Wilde, Nicholas Frankel
13 posts | 19 read | 5 to read
Over 120 years after Oscar Wilde submitted The Picture of Dorian Gray for publication, the uncensored version of his novel appears here for the first time in a paperback edition. This volume restores material, including instances of graphic homosexual content, removed by the novels first editor, who feared it would be offensive to Victorians.

Pickpick

Just realised I never posted a review. An odd read, at once familiar and not at all. The original manuscript found here was A LOT gayer, no doubt about that, but also clearly not as polished as the 20-chapter version. It's even a little boring in places. I'll still recommend the final version over this one, which is interesting academically, but not much beyond.

1️⃣ Anik, whom I met in 1990. Hubby met her in 1988. Meeting up with her next week in fact!
2️⃣ Magdalen Islands have amazing sunsets. Water 360º, so a clear view west wherever you are.
3️⃣ Sea smells, salt air.
4️⃣ Tagged. Almost done.

I've read the two censored versions before (the 13 chapters and the 20 chapters versions), but never this one. Goodreads is full of 1 ⭐ reviews, people saying it a book for and about bad people; it's hilarious! And then those who think it's too gay. Come on! The book was used as evidence in Wilde's trial for sodomy! Anywho. I'm sure it's not as good as the 20-chp version, which was worked on more, especially with character development. Fun times.

Samplergal Homophobia is rampant over there. Ridiculous. 6y
tournevis @Samplergal It's rampant everywhere, but yeah, GR is special. 6y
Samplergal @tournevis well said. 6y

LibrarianJen Is it really @samplergal ? That sucks. I rarely venture over there. 6y
tournevis @LibrarianJen @Samplergal I almost never go there, unless I'm doing research. I don't have an account and don't want one 6y
Samplergal There is some of it. I reviewed a biography of Elizabeth warren as an arc, and you wouldn‘t believe the hate. I‘ve since noticed there are people who aren‘t well read leaving reviews. ( how‘s that for being nice?) 6y
tournevis @Samplergal I would believe the hate, I'm sure. @LibrarianJen 6y
Aimeesue Rampant homophobia on GR? Yikes. I never noticed. But I only belong to one group that has a gay man as an admin, so that probably limits my bad experiences there. 😋 The whole group migrated when Shelfari shut down, and most of us had to be dragged over kicking and screaming. 6y
tournevis @Aimeesue That's a good sign, I think. Good group 6y
Aimeesue @tournevis It's a VERY good group - we've been reading together for ten years! 6y

What a good looking book. The introductions are great sources that look at the revisions and censorship of the novel by its various publishers.

The appearance of Wilde‘s novel in its uncensored form, 120 years after its submission to Lippincott‘s, is reason for celebration.

Sooooooo, antisemitism. Yeah, I hadn't come across that before in Wilde's other stuff. Not gonna lie, Oscar - I'm disappointed.

BookishFeminist 😳😳 I hadn't known this about him. 8y
Arbol @BookishFeminist Yeah his characterization of a Jewish theater owner is pretty awful. I wonder if this aspect was softened in other publications along with the sexual overtones. 8y

Moving on from giant robots to aphorisms and unapologetic hedonism. Or is it hedonism and unchecked aphorisms. I forget.
