bailedThis takes place during the 1889 Paris Exposition. The protagonist is a bookseller/amateur detective. I stopped halfway through when he spies on a woman he‘s become obsessed with and sees her hugging and laughing with another man. He declares she‘s a whore then a few pages later purchases a nude painting she posed for. I nearly threw the book across the room! Hard to believe written by two women; something was definitely lost in translation.

so-soI finished my last #lmpbc book for this round a few days ago. I‘ll get it in the mail early next week when I get back from my honeymoon. I liked this one but it took awhile to get going and I didn‘t like many of the characters. I did end up wanting to know #whodunit though and I did not figure it out before the end. @Jerdencon @robinb @Bookwormjillk
so-soI read this first in series in my #LMPBC GroupM for Round 9. I had read number 6 in #whodunitthesequel and was glad to go back to the beginning with this one. Unfortunately neither book did much for me. While the mystery was good, I didn‘t really care for the characters, and the writing didn‘t flow smoothly, with some abrupt changes in place/narrative (which could have been due to translation issues). 3/5⭐️
