“Writers‘ Spell”

"Mutter, mutter, dream and ponder;
Writer writes and fingers flutter.
Starting words of a startling tale,
On the paper, laugh or wail,
Days of joy and weeks of woe,
Mountains high and vales below,
Hero's hope, villain's might,
Evil's plot, virtue bright.
With this spell of flash and thunder,
In a vision, write the wonder."

Can I call myself a real writer because I brought my laptop to the car stereo place? I‘m so close to being done and the hour and a half wait to get my new stereo installed seemed like a good time to try to finish it up.

saresmoore Woohoo! I‘m so impressed! And of course you are a real writer! 🙌 6y

Mehso-so

A lot of useful info & it did get me inspired to keep working on my novel-in-progress. But I was disappointed she never mentioned anything related to social justice, especially when she encouraged young writers to use physical character description to show personality & made a very heterosexist romance chapter. It was also quite skewed towards fantasy & realism, so those interested in other genres would do better to find another writing guide.

Reading this writing guide aimed at tweens & teens for class. So far it is inspiring me to get back to work on the (adult) novel I've been puttering about on for ages, but I've also found it silent on anything related to social justice which is disappointing. No mention of how tying physical description to character often intersects with racism, fatphobia, ablism. No discussion of the assumed whiteness of characters. Romance chapter was v. hetero

emtobiasz ? Disappointing, if not very surprising. Why is this always the method ppl take to "clean up" books for children? Kids are more observant than you'd think... 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @emtobiasz Yeah right? When mentoring young writers wouldn't it be great to teach them from the get-go that making someone fat to indicate they're a villain is a mean thing to do? Of course kids would get that! 7y
batsy It's sad when you think kids already have an instinctive idea that so much of the world is unjust. But they are trained to accept those ideas as "just how society is" through the process of the bad stuff being kept or hidden from them, in a way. 7y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @batsy Yeah it doesn't give kids enough credit to hide things from them! And it really others kids who are different from the "norm," telling kids of color, kids with disabilities, etc. that people like them don't exist or are only villains in stories. 7y
