Beautiful Bodies
Beautiful Bodies | Kimberly Rae Miller

A brave and witty examination of how and why we try to control our bodies with food. Like most people, Kimberly Rae Miller does not have the perfect body, but that hasnt stopped her from trying. And trying. And trying some more. Her first attempt to use food to change her body came at age four, when she learned that the Inuit ate fat to stay warm in the winter. If this diet worked in the Arctic, she reasoned, why not in Long Island? Postcollege, after a brief stint as a diet-pill model, she became a health-and-fitness writer and editor working on celebrities bestselling biossugarcoating the trials and tribulations celebs endure to stay thin. But what is the ideal body? Knowing shes far from alone in this struggle, Kim sets out to find the objective definition of this seemingly unattainable level of perfection. While on a fascinating and hilarious journey through time that takes her from obese Paleolithic cavewomen, to the bland menus that Drs. Graham and Kellogg prescribed to promote good morals in addition to good health, to the binge-drinking-prone regimen that caused William the Conquerors body to explode at his own funeral, Kim ends up discovering a lot about her relationship with her own body. Warm, funny, and brutally honest, Beautiful Bodies is a blend of memoir and social history that will speak to anyone whos ever been caught in a power struggle with his or her own bodyin other words, just about everyone.

This could be slow at times, and it could be hard at times to hear how obsessed the author was with weight for most of her life. Overall though I enjoyed this book and the little fact snippets throughout. Do you mind if I wait to send this to you @Hooked_on_books until I finish another book I need to mail? I'm pregnant and trying to limit my trips out. @Wife @BookishBelle #lmpbc

Hooked_on_books Oh yeah, no rush at all. Whatever works for you is totally fine with me. Especially with all the crazy in the world now. I‘m glad you enjoyed it. 5y
Hooked_on_books The book has arrived. Thank you! 5y

@BookishBelle @Hooked_on_books @Shadowfat @suvata I really enjoyed this book about the author‘s struggles with body image. The difference here is that she does research on the topic for her job as a health and fitness writer. Many interesting footnotes about the history of dieting and body image. My takeaway: Don‘t diet. Just eat healthy foods when you have hunger. The “standards” for weight are unrealistic. Period. 3/5👙s Mailing to you Molly🌹

Wife I also recommend this author‘s book about growing up in a hoarder house 5y

I am so dreadfully behind in posting my reviews. Life comes at you fast sometimes. I read this awhile ago and thought it was alright. Maybe just not my cuppa tea? I can appreciate it as something I wouldn‘t have chosen to read and therefore, something that has broadened my horizons. Anyway, to my #lmpbc ladies, this is headed to @Wife this afternoon. I‘m so sorry it‘s so late! @Hooked_on_books @Shadowfat

Kim Miller has not only dieted her entire life but worked as a writer for diet and fitness articles. In her memoir, she blends her own story with diet research and good humor. It‘s a good exploration of body dysmorphia/poor self-confidence without ever using those terms. Hopefully the rest of the group enjoys it as well. #LMPBC #memoir

vivastory I like how you face your books out on your shelves 5y
BookishBelle Ooh! Sounds good! 5y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Thanks! I just started that a few months ago because I needed more space then I realized it was helping me remember the books I had and was particularly excited to read, so I filled all the shelves like that as a reminder to self. 😆 Functional and attractive! 5y

This is one of the three books I am reading and it is speaking to my heart. As a serial dieter I am loving the history she is giving behind diets all while talking of her personal experience! #beautifulbodies

I managed to read twelve books this month. The one not pictured is Beautiful Bodies which was on my kindle. February was a little library heavy, but I still read seven of my own books.

Interesting read. I enjoyed the research aspect of this book and the way she mixed in her personal stories in between. Every body is a good body at the end of the day!

I really enjoyed this memoir relating to the author‘s history of poor body image, a lifetime of dieting, and finding peace in her body. I‘ve followed Kim‘s writing since her Elastic Waist days, and her first memoir, Coming Clean, is unforgettable.

I‘d recommend this book to anyone who liked Courtney Martin‘s “Perfect Girls, Starving Daughters” and vice versa.

This the author and her little family. This book!! It was like reading my own life story, with all the tears and laughter, mostly tears. Well done, Ms Miller👏🏻. I recently read her other novel Coming Clean. 💕

Another honest and super readable memoir from Kimberly Rae Miller (hope she keeps writing them!). This one tackles body image, diet obsession, and identity. Not quite a deep dive into their sociocultural underpinnings, but interesting connections to historical and biological data. Like her previous memoir, Coming Clean, this was well-written, funny, and makes a valuable contribution to the larger discourse on these topics.

Beautiful story of one woman's journey towards health and loving herself. Loved the balance between historical ideals of body image and the memoir tone as the author tells her own story. #NetGalley find - I think this one is out in July.
